Police Quiz Three Over Swimming Pool Death

...“It’s a swimming pool, not a river. If you see the two corpses, their stomachs were flat which means they didn’t take in any water. It’s our firm suspicion that they were killed and thrown into the pool..."

Nigerian Police detectives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department on Wednesday questioned three members of staff of Chinese Group of Companies over the death of two of its employees at the company’s swimming pool.

Our correspondent, who visited the SCID, learnt that the PRO of the company, identified as Mr. Ajiboye; a driver and a Chinese national were quizzed by the detectives.

It was learnt that Wednesday was the first time the police would question any member of staff of the company since the incident occurred.

Two of the workers, Richard Dada and Odion Imhonbhio, died in controversial circumstances at the pool on September 9.

It was learnt that members or Richard’s family wrote statements at the SCID on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Simeon, the elder brother of Richard, has accused the management of avoiding the deceased family.

He said since Richard and his colleague, Imhonbhio, died in the pool, all efforts to see the company’s management had been met with a sharp rebuff.

The deceased’s brother, spoke with our correspondent on Wednesday at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, Lagos.

He said, “Since the incident occurred, the management of CGC has refused to see us. We have only been speaking with the driver and the Public Relations Officer of the company. They were also the ones that offered N500,000 settlement to us.

“It took the publication of PUNCH Metro to shake the company before they started to take us seriously.”

Simeon said he learnt that the company had advised its members of staff to avoid using the swimming pool as it was being renovated, adding that the deceased were said to have defied this instruction.

He however said even if the swimming pool was under construction, the employees ought not to have drowned.

He said, “It’s a swimming pool, not a river. If you see the two corpses, their stomachs were flat which means they didn’t take in any water. It’s our firm suspicion that they were killed and thrown into the pool.

“My brother was a very good swimmer; he had worked in the company for about four years. He worked in the company’s head office in Kaduna before he was transferred to Lagos.”

When our correspondent approached the PRO of CGC for comment, he refused to speak.

Corpse Found In Suitcase Was Suspect’s Son – Neighbours

Neighbours to Usman Inuwa who was caught with the corpse of a child in a suitcase in Maitama, Abuja have identified the dead child as Goodluck, his son.

The shocked neighbours described the boy as very smart and wondered what came over Inuwa that made him to kill his child. Inuwa, a welder, arrested with the corpse of the child in a suitcase last Saturday, is currently in police custody.

A correspondent of Nollywoodmagazine who visited Bwari where the suspect lived on Tuesday learnt that Inuwa’s wife left him about a month ago, following incessant quarrels between them. The nursing mother was said to have packed out of their one- room apartment, whose veranda was fenced off with zinc. The building was located behind Zenith Bank, Bwari, about 45 km from Abuja city centre. The room which was firmly locked with a padlock did not betray the nature of the heinous crime that was allegedly perpetrated inside it. A fashion designer and immediate neighbour to the suspect said he was shocked to see Inuwa’s picture and the dead child on the Internet, noting that he saw Goodluck last Friday night around his shop. “I was shocked to see Inuwa’s picture and the dead child; this was a boy I saw last Friday playing with other children in the afternoon and later in the night. Before now, Inuwa didn’t betray any suspicious behaviour except that he becomes aggressive anytime he is drunk and whenever he is high on Igbo (Indian hemp),” the neighbour who declined to give his name stated.
Another neighbour, Sam, described his pains when he heard that the welder murdered his son, describing the incident as appalling. He said for the few years he had known the suspect, he was always friendly. “I can describe him as a friendly person, but he is antagonistic and hostile anytime he is drunk and everyone around here (neighbours) knew this and we don’t interact with him once we observe his change of mood. He also quarrels with his wife and the woman who is nursing a baby girl, left him about a month ago,” Sam said.
Daniel Okogie who claimed to have known Inuwa for about nine years stated that the suspect must have been under a spell to have killed his child, whom he said Inuwa took good care of. He said, “We all know Inuwa and Goodluck and we are surprised that he would kill the boy. He took care of that boy and bought things for him; the child was to start school soon and now this tragedy happened.” Asked if the police had visited the crime scene, Okogie and other respondents said they had yet to see them, pointing out that investigators would get clues that would assist them inside the apartment where he was believed to have murdered the child.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Doris England, had said that investigations had commenced into the incident.

SHOCKING: Musician Kills Friend During A Fight Over N50000, Hides Corpse In Gutter

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old recording artiste, Obinna Obodo, for the alleged murder of his friend identified simply as Elijah.

The suspect said he killed his friend during a fight over N50, 000 and then hid his corpse in a drainage in his compound at Orile. However the police said the fight was caused by a piano the deceased sold to the suspect.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said the suspect also demanded ransom from the boss of the deceased.

She said, “The deceased sold a piano to the suspect (Obodo) and the suspect was not able to pay in full. An argument ensued between the two and Obodo used a stool to hit the deceased on the head and he (Elijah) died instantly. The suspect then tied the corpse and put it in a bag.

“While attempting to dispose of the corpse, the suspect was accosted by someone. The suspect then begged the person not to expose him and promised him the sum of N200,000. Obodo then gave the deceased’s phone to the man and told him to demand a ransom from the deceased’s boss.

“The boss reported to the police at Orile Police Station and the suspects were arrested but later released on bail. However, when Elijah’s corpse started decomposing and smelling, residents alerted the police. The suspects were re-arrested and they confessed.”

Obodo however said he killed his friend mistakenly. He said the deceased gave him N50,000 to keep but he used the money to pay for recording time at a studio. He said it was the deceased that first attacked him.

He said, “I didn’t kill him on purpose. He brought the money to me and told me to keep it for him. I’m a recording artiste so I used the money to pay for recording time. When Elijah came to my house to collect the money, I told him I didn’t have it. He got angry and picked up a stove and hit me with it. I immediately picked up a stool and hit him with it on the head and he collapsed.

“I got some water and poured it in his face but he didn’t wake up. That was when I knew that he had died. I knew that if I told his family, they would want to kill me so I hid the corpse. However, when I needed more money to promote my album I decided to demand $8,000 as ransom from his boss.

“I was arrested in the process and remained in police custody for three weeks but didn’t confess. After I was granted bail, I went to church to confess my sins. I think it was someone at the church that informed the police which then led to my arrest.”

Nollywood Actor Jailed For Gay Sex

A 28-year old actor, Bestwood Chukwuemeka, was on Monday sentenced to three-month imprisonment by a Karu Senior Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for having sexual intercourse with another man through the anus.

The convict, who resides at Gidan Mangoro, had pleaded guilty to having engaged in homosexual acts. “I am guilty of the charge against me. I was under the influence of alcohol and I want the court to temper justice with mercy’’, he said.

The police prosecutor, Mohammed Umar, had told the court that the convict committed the offence in August when the complainant was sleeping in his bed.Homosexual acts, the prosecutor said, was contrary to Section 284 of the Penal Code. The prosecutor said since Mr. Chukwuemeka had pleaded guilty to the crime he initially denied, the court should try him summarily.

The Senior Magistrate, Nafisatu Buba, sentenced him to three-month imprisonment without an option of fine.

“This would serve as warning to other youths who hide under the influence of alcohol to commit crimes,’’ she said. When he was first arraigned in early September, Mr. Chukwuemeka pleaded not guilty, saying, “I came back drunk from the night club and thought I was sleeping on the same bed with my girl-friend and I started romancing her.”

At that hearing, Mrs Buba, had ruled that alcohol should not be seen as an excuse for committing the offence, but then granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, with one of the sureties being a civil servant on Grade Level 09.

However, when the case was heard Monday, the actor suddenly pleaded guilty, and Mrs Buba summarily tried him, sentencing him to three-month imprisonment.Homosexuality and lesbianism are seriously frowned at in Nigeria. In November, the Nigerian Senate passed a strict law banning same-sex marriage and public display of affection by gays in Nigeria.

The bill – Same Sex Marriage (prohibition) bill 2011 – prescribes 14-year jail terms for convicted gays in Nigeria.

“Persons who entered into a same sex marriage contract or civil union commits an offence and are each liable on conviction to a term of 14 years imprisonment,” the new law said.

It added, “Any person, who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organization, or directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationships in Nigeria commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a term of 10-year imprisonment.”
