Mafia are considering assassinating the Pope in response to his anti-corruption sermons, warns leading Italian prosecutor

  • Since Pope Francis took office in April he has made clear he intends to rid the Holy See of corruption
  • He has already forced his own number two Cardinal Bertone into retirement after he was accused of retirement
  • In one of his first sermons as Pope he took aim at mafia calling on them to repent for 'exploiting and enslaving people'
  • Calabrian Ndrangheta is concerned by Pope Francis's crusade against corruption

The pontiff's life is in danger because his desire to sweep away corruptionis making organised criminal groups 'nervous', it has been said

The Mafia are considering a lethal strike on Pope Francis, a senior prosecutor in Italy's crime-torn deep South has warned.

The pontiff's life is in danger because his desire to sweep away corruption in 'a total clean-up' is making organised criminal groups 'nervous', the deputy chief prosecutor of Reggio Calabria, Nicola Gratteri, claimed.

Since Francis took office in April, he has made it clear that he intends to rid the Holy See of its corrupt ways and clean up the notorious Vatican bank, long used by money launderers.

He immediately dispatched the chairman of the IOR bank Gotti Tedeschi and subsequently forced his own number two Cardinal Bertone, who had been accused of corruption, into retirement.

In one of his first sermons as Pope he took aim at the mafia calling on them to repent for 'exploiting and enslaving people'.

And earlier this week in his most impassioned sermon to date, the pontiff said that officials who took bribes should be 'tied to a rock and thrown in the sea'.

Dr Gratteri said the members of the Calabrian Ndrangheta mafia are concerned by Pope Francis's crusade against corruption, 'wearing his iron crucifix, as he rails against worldly goods and plans a total clean up'.

He told the Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano: 'Those that are in the financial arms of the mafia are concerned by Pope Francis, yes.

'Those who until now have been feeding off the wealth and power that comes directly from the Church are agitated and nervous.'

Pope Francis speaks to Archbishop Georg Ganswein as he arrives in St. Peter's Square

He added: 'Papa Bergoglio [sic] is dismantling the centres of economic power in the Vatican. If the bosses could take him down they would not hesitate.'

The prosecutor admitted that the mafia would not necessarily be capable of such a strike, with the Vatican security services some of the best in the world.

'I do not know if organised criminal gangs are in a position to do something, but they are certainly considering it. It's a dangerous time for Pope Francis.'

In recent years, the Ndrangheta, based in Calabria, the 'toe' of Italy, has become the largest, richest and most feared of the country's three main criminal organisations.

Specialising in cocaine trafficking, the Ndrangheta controls some 80 percent of the market in Europe and has invested its profits in northern Italy, Germany and the US.

They have forged links with terrorist organisations worldwide and the drug cartels of South America.

Meanwhile, according to the 14th annual survey from the Global Language Monitor, a Texas-based company that tracks top talkers on the web, the Pope is now the most talked-about person on the planet.

More people are chatting about the Pope online than Edward Snowden, Kate Middleton and Miley Cyrus.

The organisation based its analysis on English-language blogs, social media and 275,000 electronic and online news media.

Besides being the Internet's top name, the Pope's Twitter handle @Pontifex was the fourth most talked about word in 2013.

The top three words were: '404' - the numeric code for a broken web-page; 'fail' and 'hashtag'.

US officially declares Boko Haram as terror group

The United States has Wednesday(today) designated radical Islamist sects, Ahl as-Sunnah lid-daʻwa wal-Jihād, also known as Boko Haram and Ansaru as foreign terrorist organisations, FTOs.

“These designations are an important and appropriate step, but only one tool in what must be a comprehensive approach by the Nigerian government to counter these groups … to help root out violent extremism,” the State Department said in a statement.

A picture taken from a video distributed to journalists in recent days through intermediaries and obtained by AFP on March 5, 2013 reportedly shows Abubakar Shekau (C), the suspected leader of Nigerian Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, flanked by six armed and hooded fighters in an undisclosed place.

The State Department’s statement, quoted by agencies reports, reads: ”In the last several years, Boko Haram and Ansaru have been responsible for thousands of deaths in northeast and central Nigeria, including dozens of attacks on churches and mosques, targeted killings of civilians, and the 2011 suicide bombing of the United Nations building in Abuja that killed 21 people and injured dozens more,” White House homeland security advisor Lisa Monaco said in a statement.

“By cutting these terrorist organizations off from US financial institutions and enabling banks to freeze assets held in the United States, these designations demonstrate our strong support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and its efforts to address security challenges in the north.”

“All of our assistance to Nigeria stresses the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring that human rights are respected. That assistance and these designations demonstrate US support for the Nigerian people’s fight against Boko Haram and Ansaru,” the State Department said.

Vanguard checks on the US Department of State’s website revealed that Boko Haram and Ansaru were listed as number 52 and 53, respectively, on the Foreign Terrorist Organisations list.

Other FTOs on the list are; HAMAS, Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), al-Qa’ida (AQ), al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Indian Mujahedeen (IM), al-Shabaab, Communist Party of the Philippines/New People’s Army (CPP/NPA), Real Irish Republican Army (RIRA) among others.

Son hacks mum to death and buries her in shallow grave

Tears have been flowing freely in Oloibiri in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State after the indigenes of the community on Monday discovered the butchered body of Mrs. Rose Johnny, in a shallow grave behind her residence.

Sources said the 67-year-old Rose was murdered by her 24-year-old son, Godsgift Johnny.

Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) discovered oil in commercial quantity in Oloibiri in 1956.

Daily Independent gathered that Godsgift butchered his mother in her sleep with a machete on Sunday night and buried her in the shallow grave.

He was said to have, after killing her, dragged her blood-soaked body through the window of her bedroom to where he dug the shallow grave and buried her.

It was learnt that Godsgift had menacingly told the deceased mother on the fateful evening that she would not live to see the next day.

But, the victim was said to have taken the threat with a pinch of the salt, as she went to bed after prayers.

“He took her bloodied body out of the room, through the window and dragged her to the back of the house”, a source said.

“He dug a shallow grave and dumped her body. He later covered it with sand.

“The next morning, at about 7.am, the door of the deceased mother’s house was noticed to be locked from the inside and several knocks on the door were not answered.

“Some concerned neighbours came and they forced the door open. The whole room was littered with blood stains and signs of struggle”.

The concerned neighbours were said to have traced the blood patches towards the window of the room, leading them to the shallow grave at the back of the building.

“We saw the shallow grave and saw the body of the woman”, he added.

But, findings revealed that Godsgift had been suffering from bouts of mental derangement as he occasionally behaves abnormally and speaks incoherently.

A member of the family, who identified himself as Godwin, declined to speak on the incident when contacted on the telephone.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bayelsa Police Command, Alex Akhigbe, confirmed the incident, saying that the case had been transferred from the Ogbia police station to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Yenagoa for proper investigation.

He said the suspect’s family claimed that he is psychologically disturbed.
