Westgate Massacre: Is this the escape route tunnel used by terrorists after shopping centre massacre?

Pictured below is the dark and dirty tunnel which terrorists are believed to have used to escape from the Westgate shopping mall.

The underground chamber starts in the car park of the shopping centre and goes directly into the heart of Nairobi.

The open section of the tunnel is guarded by thick shrubbery, which would have provided good cover for the militants.

After escaping from the mall, they could have easily headed down into the tunnel, which has water flowing through it, and into Nairobi.

Speaking from the tunnel, Sunday Mirror reporter Russell Myers said: "The tunnel starts at the Westgate centre where the siege took hold last Saturday, coming through the car park it comes 100 metres underground.

"It then comes out closely guarded by shrubbery and continues for two kilometres to the centre of Nairobi.

"The terrorists would have been able to come through here completely unseen making their escape through Nairobi museum. After that they could have changed clothes and got into cars to make their escape."
