US officially declares Boko Haram as terror group

The United States has Wednesday(today) designated radical Islamist sects, Ahl as-Sunnah lid-daʻwa wal-Jihād, also known as Boko Haram and Ansaru as foreign terrorist organisations, FTOs.

“These designations are an important and appropriate step, but only one tool in what must be a comprehensive approach by the Nigerian government to counter these groups … to help root out violent extremism,” the State Department said in a statement.

A picture taken from a video distributed to journalists in recent days through intermediaries and obtained by AFP on March 5, 2013 reportedly shows Abubakar Shekau (C), the suspected leader of Nigerian Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, flanked by six armed and hooded fighters in an undisclosed place.

The State Department’s statement, quoted by agencies reports, reads: ”In the last several years, Boko Haram and Ansaru have been responsible for thousands of deaths in northeast and central Nigeria, including dozens of attacks on churches and mosques, targeted killings of civilians, and the 2011 suicide bombing of the United Nations building in Abuja that killed 21 people and injured dozens more,” White House homeland security advisor Lisa Monaco said in a statement.

“By cutting these terrorist organizations off from US financial institutions and enabling banks to freeze assets held in the United States, these designations demonstrate our strong support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and its efforts to address security challenges in the north.”

“All of our assistance to Nigeria stresses the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring that human rights are respected. That assistance and these designations demonstrate US support for the Nigerian people’s fight against Boko Haram and Ansaru,” the State Department said.

Vanguard checks on the US Department of State’s website revealed that Boko Haram and Ansaru were listed as number 52 and 53, respectively, on the Foreign Terrorist Organisations list.

Other FTOs on the list are; HAMAS, Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), al-Qa’ida (AQ), al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Indian Mujahedeen (IM), al-Shabaab, Communist Party of the Philippines/New People’s Army (CPP/NPA), Real Irish Republican Army (RIRA) among others.

Son hacks mum to death and buries her in shallow grave

Tears have been flowing freely in Oloibiri in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State after the indigenes of the community on Monday discovered the butchered body of Mrs. Rose Johnny, in a shallow grave behind her residence.

Sources said the 67-year-old Rose was murdered by her 24-year-old son, Godsgift Johnny.

Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) discovered oil in commercial quantity in Oloibiri in 1956.

Daily Independent gathered that Godsgift butchered his mother in her sleep with a machete on Sunday night and buried her in the shallow grave.

He was said to have, after killing her, dragged her blood-soaked body through the window of her bedroom to where he dug the shallow grave and buried her.

It was learnt that Godsgift had menacingly told the deceased mother on the fateful evening that she would not live to see the next day.

But, the victim was said to have taken the threat with a pinch of the salt, as she went to bed after prayers.

“He took her bloodied body out of the room, through the window and dragged her to the back of the house”, a source said.

“He dug a shallow grave and dumped her body. He later covered it with sand.

“The next morning, at about 7.am, the door of the deceased mother’s house was noticed to be locked from the inside and several knocks on the door were not answered.

“Some concerned neighbours came and they forced the door open. The whole room was littered with blood stains and signs of struggle”.

The concerned neighbours were said to have traced the blood patches towards the window of the room, leading them to the shallow grave at the back of the building.

“We saw the shallow grave and saw the body of the woman”, he added.

But, findings revealed that Godsgift had been suffering from bouts of mental derangement as he occasionally behaves abnormally and speaks incoherently.

A member of the family, who identified himself as Godwin, declined to speak on the incident when contacted on the telephone.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bayelsa Police Command, Alex Akhigbe, confirmed the incident, saying that the case had been transferred from the Ogbia police station to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Yenagoa for proper investigation.

He said the suspect’s family claimed that he is psychologically disturbed.

Taming Your Waist...Squeezing into corsets to cut your appetite like a gastric band is the new slimming craze

First thing in the morning, just after she’s carefully applied her moisturiser and before she sprays herself with perfume, Caroline Jones takes a deep breath and performs what has become an essential part of her pre-breakfast routine.
Reaching into her lingerie drawer, she pulls out a corset, wraps it around her body and tightly fastens the seven metal clasps that bind the fabric.
Instantly her 27in waist shrinks to 25in, but that temporary reduction to her waistline isn’t the objective.
Caroline Jones says wearing a corset has enabled her to lose two stone in nine months
Caroline Jones
Devotee: Caroline Jones, 54, says that wearing the corset has enabled her to lose two stone in nine months - and taken her down from a size 16 to a size 12

For 54-year-old Caroline knows that when she sits down at her wooden kitchen table to eat her breakfast, with the corset’s steel ‘bones’ firmly sucking her stomach into place, every mouthful she consumes will take effort — and her tummy will swiftly feel full.
The result? A smaller meal — and fewer calories.
The mother-of-one from Oxford will repeat this ritual before each meal throughout the day.
She says that following this regime has enabled her to lose two stone in nine months — and taken her down from a size 16 to a size 12.
And even though most women would now think her waist enviably slim — it used to be 30in — she’s determined to keep up the discipline.

Caroline is one of thousands of women in the UK who have purchased an antiquated item of underwear in a bid to lose weight.
Dubbed the ‘corset diet’, the craze hails from Hollywood — where else? —where stars have raved about the corset’s ability to whittle away your waistline.
Actress Jessica Alba relied on them to get back into shape after pregnancy, saying: ‘I wore a double corset day and night for three months. It was sweaty, but worth it.’
Even super-slim Gwyneth Paltrow is rumoured to have used one.
'For the first time in months, I felt good about how I looked,' said Caroline
'For the first time in months, I felt good about how I looked,' said Caroline

Now they’re soaring in popularity in the UK, with devotees insisting that by restricting the waist — the very action that once saw the corsets condemned as ‘instruments of torture’ and symbols of male oppression over women’s bodies — a corset makes the perfect weight loss tool — constricting the stomach and leaving the wearer feeling full after a smaller meal, thus dulling the appetite. It’s rather like an external gastric band.
The corset concept was pioneered by a Beverly Hills doctor. Plastic surgeon Alexander Sinclair claims some of his patients have permanently lost six inches from their waistline by wearing one.
Not only does the corset remodel your figure by ‘moving the ribs’, says Dr Sinclair, but the compression retrains the appetite, leading to lasting weight loss.

Some medical experts have warned of potential health implications  of wearing such a restrictive item  of clothing.
But this doesn’t worry Caroline, a credit control manager. She’s just delighted she’s finally found something that works after years of yo-yo dieting without success.
‘When my marriage broke up in 2012, I hit an all-time low,’ she recalls.
‘I hated the way I looked. I tried WeightWatchers, but every time I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, it would send me into a spiral.
'I was so despairing — the only thing left seemed to be food.
‘No matter how hard I tried, no diet seemed to work. But I did notice that whenever I wore tight jeans, I didn’t eat so much.
'So I Googled corsets, discovered the corset diet and ordered one there and then.’
Made to measure, Caroline’s corset cost £120 and arrived within the week.
‘The corset immediately gave me better posture. And the fact my waist looked thinner gave me an instant boost.
'For the first time in months, I felt good about how I looked.
‘I didn’t have to worry about what I was eating, because the corset naturally made me want to eat less.
'It was so tight I initially only wore it for an hour, and increased it by half an hour each day until I could wear it for five hours.
'Nobody ever noticed it under my clothes, and my back felt straighter. I managed to keep good posture even at my desk all day.’
The first real changes became apparent after about three weeks.
'I thought it would be torture, but I felt incredibly feminine and sexy,' said Mandy Baker
'I thought it would be torture, but I felt incredibly feminine and sexy,' said Mandy Baker

‘My waist seemed to stay nipped in, even when the corset came off. I know you hear scare stories about corsets mangling internal organs, but if it was causing problems, it would hurt,’ she says.
‘I’m not in any pain at all.’
She puts it on before each meal — keeping it on for several hours afterward until her food is digested.
While Caroline may not be worried, medics have expressed concerns about the physical impact of corsets, with some warning that long-term use can bruise internal organs, damage skin and restrict breathing.
Professor Pierre-Marc Bouloux, endocrinologist at London’s Royal Free Hospital, has concerns about the craze.

‘Using corsets as a restrictive device means your stomach can’t distend — there’s only so much space. While you aren’t likely to displace internal organs, you could hinder respiratory movement.
‘Obese people already have decreased lung capacity, so applying additional pressure to the diaphragm could cause breathing problems.
However, he concedes that, if used sensibly and for a limited time, a corset could be a useful dietary tool.

‘If you only need to lose a moderate amount of weight and wear it during the day, or just before a meal, there’s no reason for it to cause harm.’
Mandy Baker, 31, a marketing manager from Bournemouth, has no doubts about her corset’s efficacy.
When her boyfriend, Richard, proposed nine months ago, she began to panic about how she was going to look in her wedding dress.
‘Somehow, I’d crept up to a size 16, around 11st — a lot for my 5ft 3in height.
'I should have been excited, yet all I could think about was how awful I was going to look in white.’
Scouring the internet, she came across the corset diet and, after reading testimonials, ordered a black, boned corset for £90.
‘I thought it would be torture, but I felt incredibly feminine and sexy,’ she recalls.
She wore the corset for five hours a day and after a month noticed that the indentation at her waist remained after she’d taken it off.
Katherine Hudson, 33, hasn't had to cut out her favourite foods to lose weight
Katherine Hudson, 33, hasn't had to cut out her favourite foods to lose weight

Now, eight months on, she’s a healthy nine-and-a-half stone and has gone from a size 16 to a size 12.
‘It’s been such a success I don’t have to wear the corset all day any more, but I do put it on at dinner time,’ she says.
‘The gentle pressure means I eat my food more slowly. It’s portion control without having to try.’
But dietitian Priya Tew warns that while wearing a corset may help with portion control, it’s essential to ensure those portions contain the right food groups.

‘It isn’t just a case of putting on a corset and seeing the pounds drop off,’ says Priya.
‘You still need to eat healthy food. Otherwise your body could end up deficient in vitamins and minerals.’

But for Katherine Hudson, the best thing about wearing a corset every day for three years is not only that she has lost a stone and dropped a dress size, but that she hasn’t had to cut out her favourite foods to do so.
‘Having been super-skinny in my teens, I went up a couple of dress sizes to a 12 in my 20s, after a stint working in America where the food portions are huge,’ says the 33-year-old, who lives near Eastbourne with her partner and three-year-old daughter.
‘But I just couldn’t manage a restrictive diet. And I truly believe that butter, full-fat milk and treats such as chocolate are there to be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet.’
So Katherine, director of an events company, looked to history for help.
‘I’d always admired Victorian women with their tiny waists, and it occurred to me that perhaps a corset could work for me, too,’ she says.
A little research revealed the Everyday Corset from Victoria Whiteland. A corsetiere who has worked with Rigby & Peller, Victoria’s interest was sparked when her brother was given an orthopaedic corset to help him recover from a rugby injury to his vertebrae.
‘It was a feat of engineering,’ she recalls.
So Victoria went on to design corsets comfortable enough to be worn daily — initially popular with women with scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, and those with ME or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, who found the support improved their posture and reduced pain and tiredness.
Victoria says: ‘When I first began to design corsets, 20 years ago, they were considered kinky underwear, or torturous Victorian relics. But they allow a woman to make the most of her figure, no matter what her size.

‘Our grandmothers knew corsetry could mould the figure.
'I don’t think it’s a coincidence that since they have fallen out of favour, middle-aged spread has begun much younger.’
Katherine agrees: ‘Wearing the corset made me much more aware of how much I eat.
'I love the feeling of support it gives to my abdominal muscles.
'It encourages me to hold them taut and they’re more toned than they’ve ever been. I’m slimmer than I was before I had my daughter.’
She went down to a size 10 within six months of wearing the corset.
Henry Parslow-Jones, founder of The Corset Diet website, which sells ‘waist-training corsets designed for the purpose of weight loss’, says it is the perfect answer for women who would otherwise struggle to stick to a calorie-controlled diet.
‘It reduces the area of the stomach by applying gentle and constant pressure — more like a reassuring hug than a squeeze,’ he explains.
‘Women who struggle with portion control, or are yo-yo dieters, find it leaves them without hunger pangs.
In fact, he claims wearing a corset for three to four hours a day will re-model the waist altogether, shrinking it permanently by up to six inches.
Posture-enhancing underwear that promises an instant figure fix and long-term weight loss is a seductive prospect — but what of critics who suggest they are best left in the past?
Designer Victoria Whiteland says: ‘We look back at Dickensian times, and think they were insane to go to such extremes.
'But I’m sure if they could see us resorting to liposuction or gastric bands now, they would think we were the ones who were mad.’

How to get a 20-inch waist

  • The first corsets emerged in Greek times. By the Victorian era women were said to have had ribs removed so corsets could be fastened tighter.
  • Victorians believed a girl’s waist measurement should be the same as her age in years.
  • The tightest corsets measured 20 inches around the waist.
  • In Edwardian times, the trend was for swan-bill corsets which forced the breasts up and the hips back to make an S-shape.
  • By the Twenties, the fashion was for boyish figures, and corsets were made to flatten the breasts.
  • A brief fad for rubber corsets began in the Thirties. They sold well until wearers realised they melted if they sat next to the fire.
  • Girdles took over in the Fifties, flattening the bottom, which was considered vulgar to show.
  • In 1958, DuPont created Fibre K — later Spandex, then Lycra. It meant for the first time corsets could be worn next to skin and washed easily.
  • Corsets and girdles had fallen so far from favour by the Eighties that companies tried re-naming them ‘skin enhancers,’ ‘foundation garments’ and ‘pant soothers.’

Nigerian musician, Pasuma in murder mess!

Pasuma

One of Nigeria’s most prominent Fuji musicians, Wasiu Alabi Odetola, popularly known as Pasuma Wonder is currently involved in a murder mess.

The popular Fuji veteran who recently celebrated 20 years on stage may be on his way jail if things are not well handled.

According to Eye witness reports, a member of the convoy of the Fuji star ran over a 12 year old fan after Pasuma’s vehicle knocked down the victim on their way from a show at Idimu-Council area of Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The victim, Bidemi, a fan of the ‘Orobokibo’ singer is said to have been hanging around hoping to get a glimpse of the star as he was leaving the St. Augustine Events Hall, Isheri-Idimu where the show took place only to lose his life in the process.

‘Pasuma was trying to avoid the area boys as he was leaving and so he was driving fast and it happened that he knocked the boy down and the vehicle behind him ran over the boy’, an eye witness told NET correspondent.

Pasuma is said to have been driving in his newly acquired Range Rover Sports and did not bother to slow down to find out what had happened. ‘He sped off without caring’, another eye witness said.

He is yet to issue an official statement concerning this issue.

PHOTOS: There's a new trend in Hollywood - super slit dresses - but which stars are doing it right?

Beware! These super-slit styles are not for the faint-hearted. Don’t try it without gym membership, fake tan, extra high heels ... and an eye-watering appointment at the waxing clinic!

Doing the splits

Split Skirts

Heidi Klum

Don’t try the double-splits in your casual gear. Model Heidi, 40, now an America’s Got Talent judge, lets it all hang out in a black vest and twin-split skirt on a stroll in Los Angeles. Not a good look.

Ellie Goulding

Pop star Ellie, 26, sings on the X Factor in a daring dress that gives the illusion of being completely bare down the sides. But the fashion jury is split too. Ultimately, it’s trashy not flashy, leaving too little to the imagination.

Millie Mackinstosh

The Made In Chelsea star, 23, nearly came a cropper when a sudden gust caught her Sass & Bide dress. There’s nothing stylish about this look – strapless AND slashed is taking it way too far.

Back together? Will and Jada Pinkett Smith look all loved up in Las Vegas amid split rumours

Doe this mean you're back on?

It looks like it might not actually be the end of the road for our favourite Hollywood couple.

Will and Jada, who are in the midst of an are-they-splitting? media storm , were snapped looking all loved up and happy in Las Vegas on Sunday.

The power couple and their brood were out to celebrate Will's son Trey Smith's 21st Birthday at dining hotspot Hakkasan's Ling Ling Lounge in Sin City.

And Will and Jada, who have been married since 1997, looked happy and relaxed as they larked around with their kids, Willow, 13 and Jaden, 15 and shared lots of PDAs in their private booth.

With his arm tenderly draped round Jada, Men in Black star Will looked happier than we've seen him in ages as his wife pushed her head in towards him and the couple smiled for the cameras.

It was clearly a defiant show of unity, and one that we're sure they hope will boot those split rumours into oblivion.

Just last week Jada was pictured without her wedding ring when she attended the Make Equality Reality charity event in West Hollywood.

Reports in the US suggested that Will, 45, was moving on by getting close to Margot Robbie – his co-star in romcom Focus.

Will , Jada, Jaden, Trey and Willow AKA the coolest family in history of showbiz
WireImage

He and the 23-year-old were allegedly seen fooling around in a photo booth.

A source said: “He wasn’t acting like a married man. He gave no sign that he was in a committed relationship.”

Jada, 42, reacted by shaving off the majority of her hair.

But on Sunday the couple looked like they were putting all that break-up stuff behind them.

Dozens of other guests arrived to join in the celebrations later on in the night, but Jada and Will are reported to have chosen each other for company and stayed side-by-side all evening.

Will, who was clearly delighted to have his family and friends all together in one place, took to the stage to make an announcement at one point.

We don't know what he said, but we guess he was talking about being proud of Trey and how much he loves his famalam.

Then the entire family took to the dancefloor for a boogie. We bet there were some brilliant moves.

We really hope they stay together b'cos Hollywood just wouldn't be the same without them.

I Can’t Forget The First Time I Made Love To My Wife – Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde’s Husband talks about his wife and marriage

omotola-jalade-and-husband1

Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde’s husband, Captain Matthew Ekeinde in a recent interview with Entertainment Express talks about his wife and their marriage.

What is the secret of your 17 year old marriage to Omotola?
I won’t say we have been good because I am a fine boy (laughs), but it is just the grace of God. I am so lucky and also blessed by God to have married my God given partner.
That is a very important thing about marriage, you have to find and marry your God given partner. That is why a lot marriages breakup. Some men marry women because of their hips, their boobs, legs and some other side attractions. But after sex with her so many times, what happens next? Does she have a good attitude, character or good human relationship with others? I am not saying we are perfect couple, we have our own differences but we are compatible.
We have been married for over 17 years with four beautiful kids. One thing that has been working for us as a couple is that I always encourage her to be who she wants to be. I give her full support always. Lots of married women that are caught cheating on their husbands could be traced to the fact that some of their husbands don’t allow them explore their talents.
I encourage my wife and kids to be what they want to be. Most of the influential men and women we have in this world didn’t even go to school. So it is all about exploiting your talents. Some women love acting but their husbands won’t let them believing that other men would touch or exploit them sexually. It is all about discipline. Those that want to cheat will cheat; it is all about self control.

So when you see your wife kissing on set, you don’t get jealous?
No! Not all. My wife tells me about her acting. Most times she even complains that some actors she acts love scenes with have mouth or body odour that she can’t wait to leave this scene.  So I even pity her on what she has to go through and endure being an actress.
This acting thing is just some minute acts and that is it. Will she follow the actor home? Lots of homes have been broken because of too pressure on the wife or even the kids.

For the 17 years that you have been married, what are those special moments you can’t forget in a hurry?

Hmmm! Truly and honestly, I can’t forget the very first day I made love to my wife.

Identify your tummy type......Plus tips on how to tame your yummy tummy

For many women, getting bikini ready means tackling one dreaded area in particular — our tummies.
Most of us still think the best way to achieve a washboard stomach is by doing hundreds of sit-ups. Not so, says A-list trainer and body guru James Duigan.
James, who sculpts supermodels Elle Macpherson and Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley among others, insists there is no ‘one size fits all’ method for getting a flat belly. Instead, he’s identified five key ‘tummy types’, all of which require a different approach to achieve successful toning.
Get a flat stomach: First you need to identify your tunny type
Get a flat stomach: First you need to identify your tummy type

Once you’ve identified your type, you can transform it following James’ tailor-made plan and get that flat tummy fast.

THE SPARE TYRE TUMMY

The spare tyre: This is one of the easiest tummy troubles to eliminate because it's caused by eating the wrong foods and not exercising enough
The spare tyre: This is one of the easiest tummy troubles to eliminate because it's caused by eating the wrong foods and not exercising enough

HOW TO IDENTIFY THIS TYPE
These people are likely to lead sedentary lives, perhaps with jobs that keep them desk-bound. They may also have an emotional attachment to sugary foods.
Luckily, this ‘spare tyre’ is one of the easiest tummy troubles to eliminate as, according to James, it’s caused by eating the wrong foods and not exercising enough.

TYPICAL BAD HABITS
‘If you exercise very little, eat lots of sugar and refined carbohydrates in products like biscuits, cakes and white bread, or rely on starchy carbs like pasta and rice, you probably have an overweight tummy with accompanying fat on your legs and hips,’ says James.

MIDRIFF MAKEOVER PLAN
  • Cut down on alcohol. ‘Alcohol is a fat bomb for the tummy — pure sugar which goes straight to your waist and stops you burning all other fat until the booze has been processed,’ says James. ‘Just a few glasses three to four times a week will lead to a “wine waist” — a thick midriff and podgy tummy. ‘If you want to drink occasionally that’s fine, but the bottom line is that you have to cut back on booze to get a flat belly.’
  • Once you cut out alcohol for two weeks, it’s time to overhaul your diet. ‘In a nutshell, eat well and move more,’ says James. Avoid low-fat and so-called ‘diet’ snacks. ‘These pre-packaged products are often packed full of chemicals, refined sugar, salt and preservatives to give them flavour.
  • ‘Ditch calorie counting in favour of a healthy diet full of unprocessed fresh foods such as fish, eggs, organic meat and vegetables. ‘Start the day with eggs and smoked salmon, or even grilled chicken and vegetables, and snack on sliced lean meats. ‘And don’t be afraid of eating good fats, such as avocados, nuts and oily fish. These encourage your body to burn midriff fat, giving you a flat tummy.’

  • ‘Exercise is the key to helping this tummy type,’ says James. Simply going for a long walk, doing lunges, squats or dips at home or a yoga class will be beneficial. You don’t need a gym.
TOP TIP FOR THIS TUMMY
If you regularly reward yourself for a hard day with a piece of cake or deal with bad news with a biscuit, it’s important to remember that being beautiful is as much about how you feel as how you look. The starting point for any tummy transformation is feeling happy.

THE STRESS TUMMY

Stress tummy: These types are typically over-achievers with perfectionist personalities
Stress tummy: These types are typically over-achievers with perfectionist personalities

HOW TO IDENTIFY  THIS TYPE
Stressed-tummy types are typically over-achievers with perfectionist personalities. They are usually also susceptible to digestive conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which can cause bloating and make their tummies look far worse.
‘Stress tummies are easy to spot, as the weight is specific to the front of the midriff and the umbilical area,’ explains James. ‘When stressed, we produce cortisol, a hormone which encourages the body to cling on to fat around the stomach.’
Stressed tummies will also be fairly hard to the touch, rather than wobbly.

TYPICAL BAD HABITS
It’s likely you skip meals, abuse your adrenal system with too much caffeine and grab junk food for convenience.

MIDRIFF MAKEOVER PLAN
  • Get an early night. ‘Stressed women nearly always sleep badly, which disrupts the production of leptin, the hormone which helps regulate appetite and metabolism,’ James explains. ‘This is why we eat more when we are tired and crave fat-depositing sugary snacks for an instant energy boost.’
  • Combat exhaustion with a relaxation strategy of deep-breathing, meditation and long baths before bed to encourage a good night’s sleep and limit coffee consumption to no more than two cups a day.
  • Don’t go for the burn when exercising. ‘Excessive cardio which increases cortisol levels isn’t the answer,’ says James. ‘Instead, yoga, long walks and resistance work with weights is perfect for sculpting and building up strength while calming the system.’
  • Magnesium is a calming mineral to help soothe a stressed belly. James advises eating lots of magnesium-rich foods such as dark green leafy vegetables, Brazil nuts and seeds.
TOP TIP FOR THIS TUMMY
Stress-busting stretches and yoga poses at night time can help to lower cortisol levels, while chamomile teas or James’ own Bodyism Body Serenity supplement (£30 for 20 servings, bodyism.com) can also help the body unwind.

THE LITTLE POOCH

The little pooch: These women are likely to be busy mums or have demanding careers - hey may even be a gym junkie
The little pooch: These women are likely to be busy mums or have demanding careers - hey may even be a gym junkie

HOW TO IDENTIFY  THIS TYPE
These women are likely to be busy mums or have demanding careers. ‘They may even be a gym junkie, but stuck in a workout-and-diet rut, perhaps always eating the same foods and doing the same routine at the gym, which keeps you slim but leaves you with a lower belly that spoils your silhouette,’ says James.

TYPICAL BAD HABITS
‘Doing excessive crunches and using gimmicky gym items such as ab-rollers can place a strain on the hip flexors and the lower back, causing the tummy muscles to protrude so your belly sticks out,’ says James.

MIDRIFF MAKEOVER PLAN
  • Good nutrition and plenty of fibre are essential to improve digestive conditions such as inflammation, bloating and constipation, which can make a pooch tummy worse. Green leafy vegetables, oatbran and wholemeal grains are good, natural sources of fibre.
  • Sit-ups done incorrectly increase your lower back curve and accentuate the ‘pouch’ effect. Swap sit-ups for planks. Do these by lying face down on a mat, resting on your forearms. Push off from the floor, rising onto your toes and elbows, so your body is parallel to the floor from your head to your heels. Start off doing ten seconds and build up to a whole minute.
  • It’s a common misconception that using weights bulks women up. In fact, the opposite is true. Using weights will burn serious amounts of fat in a short space of time, so try introducing circuits — repetitions of exercises like squats or lunges which work individual muscle sets.
TOP TIP FOR THIS TUMMY
Be kind to your tummy, reduce inflammation by drinking lots of water and eating easy-to-digest foods such as green vegetables and lighter proteins such as fish and chicken.

The Mummy tummy: Women with these bellies have usually given birth in the past few years, and, being a typical mum, have little time for themselves

HOW TO IDENTIFY  THIS TYPE
Women with these tummies have usually given birth in the past few years, and, being a typical mum, have little time for themselves. ‘After giving birth, the uterus drops and is much heavier than it was pre-pregnancy,’ says James. ‘It takes at least six weeks to return to its usual size, so don’t even think about trying to get a flat stomach until after then.
‘You need to re-train your pelvic floor and lower abs to increase blood flow and strengthen loose muscles.’

TYPICAL BAD HABITS
Rushing back to exercise too quickly. ‘I would suggest waiting around two to three months,’ says James. ‘Being stressed about getting rid of your baby weight will only make you cling onto it more. Give yourself a break!’

MIDRIFF MAKEOVER PLAN
  • ‘Fish oil supplements turn on  fat-burning hormones and turn off  fat-storing hormones,’ says James. ‘Begin by taking three 1,000mg capsules a day with meals and build up to five. I’ve trained Elle Macpherson through two pregnancies and she takes these every day.’
  • Try to eat good fats — found in sources such as nuts, oils and olives — every day. ‘Not only do they help you burn fat and absorb vitamins from food effectively, they also help combat tiredness — a big help for tired mums,’ says James.
  • Gentle pelvic floor exercises (known as Kegels) act as a natural corset for the body to flatten your tummy from the inside out. Squeeze and clench your pelvic floor muscles 15-20 times, in five sessions a day.
  • Steer clear of sit-ups. ‘After giving birth, the linea alba muscles — which run down the mid-line of the abdomen — separate and you need to allow them to recover,’ says James. ‘Crunches are the worst thing you can do, as they will force these muscles farther apart. Instead, breathe deep into your tummy while on all fours, then slowly exhale while doing a pelvic floor exercise.’
TOP TIP FOR THIS TUMMY
Daytime naps (try putting up blackout blinds) and stretching before bed are important ways to restore sleep hormones and boost fat-burning.

THE BLOATED TUMMY

Bloated tummies: These are often flat in the morning, but swell throughout the day with gas or indigestion
Bloated tummies: These are often flat in the morning, but swell throughout the day with gas or indigestion

HOW TO IDENTIFY  THIS TYPE
Bloated tummies are often flat in the morning, but swell throughout the day with gas or indigestion. Bloating affects both slim and overweight women. It is almost always caused by food intolerances and allergies, or sluggish bowels as a result of a poor diet.

TYPICAL BAD HABITS
You eat the same foods and may have done so for a lifetime without realising you’re intolerant to them.

MIDRIFF MAKEOVER PLAN
  • ‘The most common intolerances I see are wheat and gluten (bread, pasta, pastries, pizza, cakes and cereals), alcohol, yeast (in muffins, beer and pastries) and processed dairy (cheese, milk, butter),’ says James. ‘Gluten in particular can inflame the bowel and make the stomach look bigger.
  • ‘Experiment to work out what bothers your belly as you know your body better than anyone else. Try eliminating key culprits such as gluten for a fortnight to see if your bloating reduces, or worsens when you reintroduce foods. Focus on a diet with lots of fresh veg, meat, chicken and fish.’
  • Sluggish bowels are often a result of eating the wrong foods in the wrong way. Make breakfast your biggest meal, as this is when  digestion is at its peak, and avoid eating late at night which leads to bloating. Chew food properly and drink plenty of water to keep the digestive system moving.
  • Bloating can be a sign of imbalanced gut flora. So to get your tummy really flat you need to repopulate it with friendly bacteria. Prebiotic and probiotic supplements are the simplest way. Natural sources include miso soup, sour cream and some fruit and veg including kale, garlic and onions. A healthy gut means a flat stomach.

TOP TIP FOR THIS TUMMY
Believe it or not, breathing can be the best thing you can do for this kind of tummy. Try this each morning: lay on your back, completely relaxed, and breathe deep into your tummy ten times. After eating, a walk will help the digestive process, too.

Artist nails his own testicles to the ground in front of horrified tourists......Ouch!

Artist nails his own testicles to the ground in front of horrified tourists

A Russian performance artist was hospitalised Sunday after stripping naked and nailing his testicles to a Red Square cobblestone in protest against the Kremlin's crackdown on political rights.

A video of the graphic action, available on Russian websites, showed artist Pyotr Pavlensky sitting naked outside Lenin's Mausoleum being covered with a blanket by police officers while horrified passersby looked on.
CLICK BELOW TO WATCH VIDEO:

The state-run RIA Novosti news agency said Pavlensky was taken to a police station after being treated in a central Moscow clinic.

The Saint Petersburg-based artist said in a statement posted on the Grani.ru website that he was trying to draw attention to Russian society's inaction in the face of the development of a "police state".

Russia marked its annual Police Day holiday on Sunday.

It is not the first time the 29-year-old has resorted to eye-watering methods of protest.

He has previously sewn his lips together to demonstrate against the jailing of two female members of the Pussy Riot punk band who staged an anti-Kremlin performance inside Moscow's main cathedral in 2011.

Black boy who was executed for murder of 2 white girls may be retried 70 years after his death

A 14-YEAR-OLD black boy who was executed for the murder of two white girls could be retried posthumously nearly 70 years after his death.

George Stinney

George Stinney was strapped to an electric chair in South Carolina in 1944 and was the youngest person to be put to death in the US over the past century.

He was accused of killing two girls, aged seven and 11. The teenager reportedly confessed and was convicted by an all-white jury in a trial lasting less than a day. There were no lengthy appeals and he was electrocuted 84 days after the crime took place. The request for a new trial includes sworn statements from two of Stinney's siblings who say he was with them on the day the girls were killed.

Stinney's now elderly sister, Annie Ruffner, who was seven at the time, said she and her brother were grazing their cow when the girls appeared and asked them where they could find maypop flowers. According to Mrs Ruffner, her brother told them he did not know – and the girls left.

The girls' bodies were found the next morning in a ditch. Stinney's confession and the transcript from the trial have since disappeared.

Wife of the Enugu State Governor, Clara Chime opens up as she moves out of government house

Wife of the Enugu State Governor, Clara Chime

Mrs. Clara Chime today stated that she was forced to remain as wife of Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State.

She said she would have walked away from the marriage during the period Chime was sick and away for five months, but remained on “very compassionate grounds.”

Mrs. Chime said her thinking was that sickness would change the governor’s ways towards her, but stated that he even got worse months after his return from undergoing a cancer treatment abroad.

According to her, on many occasions she attempted to leave, her family members, for pecuniary reasons, insisted she stayed put.

She said even when it was apparent that Chime no longer wanted the marriage, her family wouldn’t let her go.

She made this disclosure through the mobile telephone set of one of her male siblings, about four hours after she eventually packed out from the Governors Lodge.

The sibling declined revealing his identity to The PUNCH, but stated that he was one of the few family members who supported Mrs. Chime’s agitation to quit the marriage.

He said if he revealed his identity, it could cause a stir between him and other family members, who were still holding meetings with members of the Chime family on the matter.

He claimed that the governor had long lost interest in the marriage but held forth because he (Chime) didn’t want any scandal over the issue.

“So, there was no need joining other family members into forcing her to remain in a marriage that he (the governor) was no longer interested in,” said the source.

10 Dangers of Diet Soda......Drinking just one bottle of diet drink each day is a danger to your health

WITH no calories to worry about, millions of people enjoy a diet soft drink assuming it must be healthier than the full-sugar version and could help them to lose weight.

But they are wrong. Just one small bottle a day could increase your risk of diabetes, obesity and heart disease, say US scientists.

The fizzy drinks, packed with artificial sweeteners, are a danger to health and experts warn that they are just as hazardous as their sugary counterparts.

HERE ARE 10 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD GIVE UP DIET SODA:

It confuses your body
Artificial sweeteners have more intense flavor than real sugar, so over time products like diet soda dull our senses to naturally sweet foods like fruit, says Brooke Alpert, RD, author of The Sugar Detox. Even more troubling, these sugar stand-ins have been shown to have the same effect on your body as sugar. "Artificial sweeteners trigger insulin, which sends your body into fat storage mode and leads to weight gain," Alpert says.

It could lead to weight gain, not weight loss
Diet soda is calorie-free, but it won't necessarily help you lose weight. Researchers from the University of Texas found that over the course of about a decade, diet soda drinkers had a 70% greater increase in waist circumference compared with non-drinkers. And get this: participants who slurped down two or more sodas a day experienced a 500% greater increase. The way artificial sweeteners confuse the body may play a part, but another reason might be psychological, says Minnesota-based dietitian Cassie Bjork. When you know you're not consuming any liquid calories, it might be easier to justify that double cheeseburger or extra slice of pizza.

It is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes
Drinking one diet soda a day was associated with a 36% increased risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes in a University of Minnesota study. Metabolic syndrome describes a cluster of conditions (including high blood pressure, elevated glucose levels, raised cholesterol, and large waist circumference) that put people at high risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, Bjork explains.

It has no nutritional value
When you drink diet soda, you're not taking in any calories—but you're also not swallowing anything that does your body any good, either. The best no-calorie beverage? Plain old water, says Bjork. "Water is essential for many of our bodily processes, so replacing it with diet soda is a negative thing," she says. If it's the fizziness you crave, try sparkling water.

Its sweetener is linked to headaches
Early studies on aspartame and anecdotal evidence suggests that this artificial sweetener may trigger headaches in some people. "I have several clients who used to suffer from migraines and pinpointed their cause to diet soda," Bjork says.

It'll ruin your smile over time
Excessive soda drinking could leave you looking like a Breaking Bad extra, according to a case study published in the journal General Dentistry. The research compared the mouths of a cocaine-user, a methamphetamine-user, and a habitual diet-soda drinker, and found the same level of tooth erosion in each of them. The culprit here is citric acid, which weakens and destroys tooth enamel over time.

It makes drinking more dangerous
Using diet soda as a low-calorie cocktail mixer has the dangerous effect of getting you drunk faster than sugar-sweetened beverages, according to research from Northern Kentucky University. The study revealed that participants who consumed cocktails mixed with diet drinks had a higher breath alcohol concentration than those who drank alcohol blended with sugared beverages. The researchers believe this is because our bloodstream is able to absorb artificial sweetener more quickly than sugar.

It is associated with depression
A recent study presented at a the American Academy of Neurology meeting found that over the course of 10 years, people who drank more than four cups or cans of soda a day were 30% more likely to develop depression than those who steered clear of sugary drinks. The correlation held true for both regular and diet drinks, but researchers were sure to note that the risk appeared to be greater for those who primarily drank diet sodas and fruit punches. Although this type of study can't prove cause and effect, its findings are worth considering.

It may be bad for your bones
Women over 60 are already at a greater risk for osteoporosis than men, and Tufts University researchers found that drinking soda, including diet soda, compounds the problem. They discovered that female cola drinkers had nearly 4% lower bone mineral density in their hips than women who didn't drink soda. The research even controlled for the participants' calcium and vitamin D intake. Additionally, a 2006 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that cola intake (all kinds, not just diet) was associated with low bone-mineral density in women.

It may hurt your heart
Just one diet soft drink a day could boost your risk of having a vascular event such as stroke, heart attack, or vascular death, according to researchers from the University of Miami and Columbia University. Their study found that diet soda devotees were 43% more likely to have experienced a vascular event than those who drank none. Regular soda drinkers did not appear to have an increased risk of vascular events. Researchers say more studies need to be conducted before definitive conclusions can be made about diet soda's effects on health.

10 Reasons why you are always hungry...and what to do about it

We are all guilty of it...mindlessly munching on a bag of pretzels during a reality TV marathon or treating ourselves to a second helping when the first was plenty. But boredom and indulgence aside, why else are we reaching for a snack when we should feel full? Some of it can be blamed on habit, while other triggers have more to do with our body's hunger signals. Check out the list below to find out the most common overeating pitfalls and simple solutions for avoiding these traps.

1. You didn't get enough sleep last night.
Lack of rest stimulates two faux hunger triggers: energy deficiency, to which our natural reaction is to nourish our bodies, and appetite hormone confusion. "When our bodies are drained, levels of leptin—a hormone produced by our fat cells that controls our appetite—decrease, while levels of gherlin—a hormone produced by our stomach that stimulates our appetite—increase," explains American Dietetic Association spokeswoman Karen Ansel, RD. That's two hormones working against you. "Getting eight hours of sleep a night is the easiest thing you can do to prevent overeating." If you do fall short on zzz's, be sure to load up on nourishing, naturally energizing foods—such as fresh fruit, complex carbohydrates and lean proteins—throughout the day to help your body feel satisfied.

2. You're taking medication that causes hunger as a side effect.
If you felt ravenous the last time you were taking an antibiotic to tame an allergic reaction, joint inflammation, acne or a bad cold, the medicine may be to blame. "Medication that contains mild steroids, like prednisone, a corticosteroid, ramp up hunger big time," says Milton Stokes, RD, owner of One Source Nutrition, LLC. "If you've already eaten a normal-size meal, ignore the drug-inflated hunger," says Stokes. Instead, try an oral fix like chewing gum, sipping warm coffee or brushing your teeth, he suggests. If you're on long-term steroid therapy, consult a dietitian to devise an eating plan that will help you feel more satisfied throughout the treatment.

3. You're thirsty or dehydrated.
The symptoms of dehydration (sleepiness, low energy) closely mimic those of being overly hungry, which may lead you to think you need food to increase your energy level, explains Sandon. When you're thirsty, your mouth becomes dry, a symptom that eating will temporarily relieve, notes Sandon. She suggests drinking a tall glass of water or cup of herbal tea before eating and waiting for your body's hunger signals to adjust (about 10 minutes). "Doing so could save hundreds of calories."

4. It's "mealtime."
As creatures of habit, we tend to eat on autopilot. While some regularity is encouraged so that you don't become overly hungry, which could lead to bingeing, it's also important to listen to hunger signals, says Ansel. "Next time you sit down to eat, ask yourself: 'Am I really hungry?' If the answer is 'no,' either eat a smaller portion or put off the meal for an hour—though no longer than that," suggests Ansel. This also applies to situations you associate with eating, like flying. "We've been conditioned to associate an airplane ride with eating," Ansel says. The solution: "Pay attention to timing," recommends Lona Sandon, MEd, RD, assistant professor of nutrition at University of Texas Southwestern. "Know how long the flight is and plan satisfying meals around it." Also, take advantage of the free (hydrating) beverages, she adds, as the enclosed space leads to hunger-causing dehydration.

5. You just worked out.
We are conditioned to feed ourselves after exercising. And, after a particularly strenuous exercise session like a spinning class or interval-training workout, we tend to feel ravenous. But that doesn't mean your body needs extra calories. "It means your body needs a specific kind of nourishment," says Marissa Lippert, RD, a nutrition consultant and dietitian in New York City. Opt for roasted chicken or other lean meats (protein will replenish your muscles) and brown rice or other whole grains (complex carbohydrates take a while to break down) to help your body recover faster and fend off hunger longer.

6. Not enough time has passed since you finished your meal.
You've just eaten lunch only to wonder: "Why am I still hungry?" Before you assume you didn't eat enough, consider that maybe you ate too quickly. "Appetite hormones need time to tell your brain you're full," explains Sandon. To prevent post-meal hunger pangs, keep these pointers in mind: Eat slowly, putting down your fork between bites; choose flavorful and satisfying foods; and include a combination of fat, protein and carbohydrates in every meal. If you're still hungry, try sucking on a mint to ward off your cravings.

7. The women around you are eating.
A joint study out of Duke University and Arizona State University found that women tend to mirror other women's eating habits. "When one overdoes it, the rest often follow along," Ansel confirms. To avoid this copycat effect, Lippert suggests taking a quick minute to reassess your own eating habits—or, if all else fails, grabbing a pal and evacuating the scene of the food. A more permanent fix? Be the one who sets a healthy example for your girlfriends to follow. Their waistlines will thank you! "Just as obesity is contagious, so are healthy habits," says Dawn Jackson Blatner, author of The Flexitarian Diet.

8. You've been drinking alcohol.
It's long been suspected that alcohol contributes to an increased appetite. Though the underlying mechanisms are unknown, a common hypothesis is that it makes food more palatable. What we do know is that alcohol decreases our defenses, which is detrimental to those who restrict their eating, explains Jackson Blatner. Furthermore, "People expect that alcohol will make them eat more, which leads them to unabashedly do so," Sandon adds. The solution? Eat before you order that glass of wine, beer or cocktail. To prevent overeating the next day, especially after a night of heavy drinking, be sure to drink plenty of water to replenish your dehydrated body.

9. You smell or see food.
"We tend to eat with our senses more than our stomachs," says Ansel. When we smell or see food—even if it's in a photo, advertisement or TV show—our mouths water, which stimulates our appetite. Onset factors can include smelling a batch of cupcakes baking, seeing snack food laid out on the counter or watching a cooking show. The clear-cut solution: "Out of sight, out of mind." Leave the room, hide the candy jar, turn off the TV—and the craving to eat will likely subside, says Ansel.

10. You're stressed out.
"Studies show that when people recognize they're stressed, they are more likely to turn to high-fat, salty or sugary foods," says Sandon. "These foods both are comforting and feel good in the mouth," she adds. But it's not all about emotional eating. Sandon notes that your body's chemical reaction to stress could also cause hunger pangs. "Increased levels of the stress hormones cortisol and insulin may be associated with triggering appetite." Either way, appetite control boils down to decision-making.

VIDEO: Brave man rescues kidnapped cousin, shoots kidnapper dead

Bethany Arceneaux

Bethany Arceneaux has been released from Lafayette General Medical Center and is now in the care of her family, reports ABC News.

At the time that she was admitted to the hospital Friday afternoon, Arceneaux told investigators that she had not eaten or had anything to drink since she was abducted by her ex-boyfriend — and father of her child — on Wednesday.

The abandoned house where Arceneaux was being held hostage was hidden behind sugarcane as tall as “eight feet,” said Judice, and the field was a ” brutal search area.”
Only the house’s roof was visible from the road, and the police failed to find Arceneaux on Wednesday and Thursday, even though they searched the same area as her family who refused to give up the search.

See rescue footage below:

————————————————————————————————————

Scott Thomas, Bethany Arceneaux’s ex-boyfriend who abducted her and attempted to kill her, was killed by her cousin. Though the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s department has not released his name, reports identify him as Marcelus Arceneaux.

According to CNN, “Police and bloodhounds had searched the area without success on Thursday. On Friday morning, police were met by about 20 relatives — including uncles, brothers and cousins — who had organized their own search party,” Sheriff’s Capt. Kip Judice said.
The sheriff’s department determined that the cousin acted within a state law that allows deadly force to be used to prevent great bodily harm or death, Judice said. He is not expected to face charges, but the case will be reviewed by the district attorney.
The victim’s brother, Ryan Arceneaux, says his sister is recovering: “‘She’s shook up, she’s sliced up, but she’s alright, Ryan said.
“We went and got her in that house. We kicked doors down. It was like a movie unfolding,” he continued. “If we wouldn’t have done what we did, she would have been dead.”

In a restraining order earlier this year, Bethany Arceneaux detailed her fear of Thomas:
“After we called cops on him he grabbed our son from me and shoved him into the car,” Arceneaux wrote.
“He then got on his knees in front of the cops and said “I swear to God on all my children I will kill you.”
“Since then Scott has been riding around my mom’s house and my work looking for me,’ she added. ‘I am afraid for me and my son’s life.”

Bethany Arceneaux, 29, who was taken hostage by her ex-boyfriend Scott Thomas on Wednesday, was rescued from an abandoned Louisiana house Friday afternoon by family and friends who were searching for her.

Boy kidnapped in Abuja church freed for N1.5m

Chibuike

Chibuike

A-10-year old boy, Chibuike Ogbusu, who was abducted at St. Bartholomew Cathedral Church (Anglican Communion) Kubwa, Abuja last week, has been released early Sunday morning by his abductors after collecting a ransom of N1.5 m.

Chibuike had attended the Boys Brigade’s rehearsal at the church when he was kidnapped and taken to an unknown destination.

Chibuike told PUNCH Metro that he was driven to Minna, Niger State by a lone kidnapper, adding that he was fed rice or bread and sometimes potatoes twice daily. He also said he was allowed to speak with his father on the phone 2 days after he was kidnapped, and 3 times before he was released.

According to Chibuike's father, the kidnapper had earlier demanded N10m, but the sum was negotiated to N1.5m which was dropped at a location around Dei-Dei as directed by the kidnapper.

After collecting the ransom, the kidnappers had asked a commercial motorcyclist to take Chibuike to his family house a few minutes’ drive from Kubwa.

Spanish police arrest 25 in 'Nigeria sex-trafficking ring'

goods seized by Spanish police
More than 100 vans were also seized, filled with high-end goods

Spanish police say they have arrested 25 people in a sex-trafficking ring that brought women from Nigeria to work as prostitutes.

The women, allegedly lured with the promise of good jobs in Europe, were first flown to Mexico or Brazil, travelling on false identity documents.

From there, they were flown to Paris, then smuggled into Spain to work in the sex trade, police say.

Five women who were victims of the sex ring were freed in the raids.

Police found one member of the gang performing an abortion on one of the five women, reports the BBC's Madrid correspondent, Tom Burridge.
Hidden goods
Arrests were made across Spain - in Madrid, Toledo, Cantabria and Palma de Mallorca.

Map of Spain showing Madrid and Valencia

More than 100 vans concealing luxury goods were also seized.

The gang used the vans to launder their profits and send them back to Lagos, police say.

The vans, with dark-tinted windows and welded doors, were stocked full of beer but had luxury items hidden deeper inside.

Goods worth an estimated 5m euros (£4.1m; $6.6m) were found in 94 vans seized in Madrid and another 26 in the port of Valencia, including high-end televisions and cases of alcohol.

Police say the gang was formed more than 20 years ago in Nigerian universities and was also known for sending so-called Nigerian letters by email, asking recipients to send money.

Eight of the 25 people arrested were in Spain illegally, they say.

Miley Cyrus wears VERY revealing leotard for second performance at MTV EMAs ...But thank goodness there was no twerking or grinding 2nd time!

Proper emosh
WireImage

We knew she was going to get more naked at some point this evening.
And Miley hasn't let us down.
The 20-year-old twerkster took to the MTV EMAs stage for the second time this evening, and wore a tiny sparkly leotard which revealed the majority of her lower body as she sang Wrecking Ball.
Behind her on the screen was a huge image of her own face, looking all teary and sad.
And we were expecting some kind of naked sledgehammer action.
But instead, Billy Ray's, girl went all serious on us and got quite upset as she sang her heartfelt ballard.
It was nothing like her performance earlier this evening when Miley took to the stage and twerked on a dwarf who was wearing a PVC jumpsuit .
Yes, you read that right.
Miley looking all sad and teary (Empics)

Miley landed on the EMA stage in a spaceship and was dressed as an astronaut in a silver bodycon dress and space helmet.
Miley then hopped out with a dwarf by her side and could be seen grinding and shaking her bum on stage as she sang her hit single We Can't Stop to the star-studded crowd.
At one stage she even grabbed the little person's breast and slapped her bottom. Then her PVC-clad companion started patting Miley's bottom too.
It was all very... unexplainable.
Then Miley moved on from her small friend and started twerking on a giant burka-wearing alien.
Amazingly, we didn't see THAT much ofher tongue, and Liam Hemsworth's ex looked more dignified and modest than she did at the VMAs this summer.
But she did turn up in a TINY dress and thigh-high boots earlier .

Miley does some intergalactic twerking

Hope at last for Yemen's child brides as the country's leaders finally act to stop forced marriages of girls as young as NINE

  • The Yemeni minister for Legal Affairs is to put forward a bill to ban it
  • Since 2008, cases of brides as young as nine have come to light
  • Campaigners have offered a cautious welcome to the reports
  • Harrowing cases include that of Ilham, 13, who died days after her wedding

From Sally Al-Sabahi who, after being married at the age of 10, was raped and beaten by her much older husband to 13-year-old Ilham who, in 2010, died from internal bleeding four days after being forcibly married, the plight of Yemen's child brides makes for harrowing reading.

But following international condemnation and campaigns by charities such as UNICEF and Equality Now, the country's government finally appears ready to end the shocking tradition once and for all.

Fouad Al Ghaffari, the director general of Yemen's Ministry of Human Rights, has revealed that the country's minister for Legal Affairs, Mohammed Al Mikhlafi, is to submit a bill that would outlaw child marriages if passed.

Protest: A former child bride attends a demonstration against the practice in the Yemeni capital Sana'a

And in a sign that attitudes might finally be changing in the Middle Eastern country, it was reported last week that police officers stepped in to prevent the marriage of a nine-year-old girl in the southern city of Taiz - the first time such an intervention has taken place.

According to reports on the BBC website, police halted the wedding and convinced the father of the girl, named locally as Hiba, not to allow the nuptials to go ahead.

Although there is nothing currently to prevent Hiba's wedding from happening at a later date, campaigners are cautiously welcoming of the intervention and the news that legislation could be imminent.

'In 2009, the Yemeni parliament considered a draft bill that fixed the minimum age of marriage for girls at age 17 and included penalties and punishment for those in violation,' said Equality Now's Middle East and North Africa consultant, Suad Abu-Dayyeh.

'Unfortunately this was not successful, but we are heartened that the Yemeni Human Rights Minister Hooria Mashhour has requested the reintroduction of this bill, which would effectively ban child marriages in the country.'

Rescued: Nojud Ali, 8, (left) and nine year-old Arwa were granted divorces after being forcibly married in 2008

She added: 'Along with our local partners, the Yemen Women's Union, we wholeheartedly support the minister and the Human Rights Ministry in their efforts to ensure that the government of Yemen lives up to its obligations under international law by passing a law prohibiting child marriage so that girls are no longer forced to undergo the harmful physical and psychological effects of child marriage.

'It is also promising that the government appears to be be taking steps to deal with this issue head-on and protect girls from this devastating abuse.'

Cases recorded since 2008 include that of 11-year-old Wafa who was married in 2010 to a 40-year-old farmer who repeatedly raped and tortured her and 13-year-old Hind, who in 2009, was married to a 70-year-old man.

While many cases end in tragedy, Wafa was one of the lucky ones after Equality Now and local partner Yemeni Women Union (YWU) successfully helped her obtain a divorce.

'My message to other parents is that they should not think of marrying their daughters at a young age, girls should go to school,' said Wafa.

'I don’t want any girl to suffer as I did. Girls should be educated in order to be able to live happily and in dignity.'

Gov. Chime Attempts To Eject Wife From State House "Detention"

Enugu First Lady, Clara Chime -PhotoCredit: Punch Newspaper
By SaharaReporters, New York

Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State today attempted to eject his wife, Clara Chime, from her State House quarters over her decision to go public about his illegal detention of her.

In effect, Mrs. Chime would have regained the freedom she has been denied for months, and for which she has campaigned publicly in the past week.

The governor’s action followed a marathon meeting the governor held with Clara’s Igwe family, during which the governor decided to let her leave the government house.

However, insiders say Mrs. Chime said she would prefer to travel out, preferably to the United Kingdom, to take care of herself and then be allowed to return to her matrimonial home upon completion of her trip.

Sources at the meeting said the governor turned down that offer, instead telling the First Lady to pack out immediately.

Security sources said that her refusal to leave immediately led to an attempt to forcefully eject her from the government house.

Following Mrs. Chime’s refusal to leave unceremoniously, the governor relented and called for another emergency meeting of the family. The meeting was still ongoing as at the time of filing this report.

On Friday, Governor Chime met with a delegation from the National Human Rights Commission for several hours to explain the reason for the confinement of the First Lady to a section of Government House.

Mrs. Chime's public outcry was first reported by SaharaReporters last week. In a letter, she complained she had been confined within Government House and had suffered depression. She subsequently also disclosed the harsh circumstances of her detention, including being threatened by the governor whenever she asked permission to leave.

Mrs. Chime accuses NHRC of accepting a bribe from Governor Chime to write misleading report about her illegal detention in Government House

Clara Chime
By SaharaReporters, New York

Clara Chime, the estranged wife of Enugu State’s Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, has expressed disappointment about the report of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) about its investigation of her complaint, and asked for it to be withdrawn.

“Apart from the fact that the information was largely false, it showed lack of sensitivity in publishing sensitive medical detail,” she said yesterday in a letter to her lawyer, Femi Falana. “This has the effect of tarnishing and damaging my reputation. It is as though the Commission set out to ridicule me.”

On Friday, the commission, led by its executive secretary, Bem Angwe, travelled to the Enugu State Government House to investigate the alleged forcible detention of Mrs. Chime. Following the visit, the NHRC published an interim report on its website in which it described the issue as a disagreement between the governor and his wife “over the procedure for the treatment of her health challenges, which border on occasional hallucinations and depression.”

In the letter to Mr. Falana, she said, “I made it clear to them that I had a nervous breakdown and found it inexplicable as to how hallucinations featured as part of my symptoms. It is important to make this clear so that the public should be made aware of this and that the Commission should recognise part of her ethos in protecting human dignity.”

Noting suggestions that that the Commission appears biased already because of the profile of the person whose reputation is at stake, she said, “I want to believe that the Commission would approach my case with open mind and in particular recognise me as a victim of crime. I hope that common sense would prevail and that the Commission should now retract the damaging publication and stop stigmatising me.”

In her previous response , Mrs. Chime accused members of the commission of accepting a bribe from Governor Chime to write the misleading report about her illegal detention in Government House, Enugu.

Would you share a bath with eels?....New exfoliating treatment that involves bathing in a tank of eels

Many people are prepared to go to increasingly extreme lengths to enhance their looks.

But the latest beauty fad, involving bathing in a tank of eels in order to exfoliate the skin, has been condemned by health inspectors as extremely dangerous.

The new treatment is just another in a bewildering array of beauty treatments currently making their way into spas and beauty salons, which experts say are often not regulated as they should be.

'Extremely dangerous': The latest beauty fad involves bathing in a tank of eels in order to exfoliate the skin

The technique, imported from China, involves immersing the full body into a bath of pencil-long eels – an extension of the fish pedicures that were popular in 2011.

Wendy Nixon, a health and safety consultant, last week told a conference hosted by the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health (CIEH), the body which represents health inspectors, that there were problems with the procedure, especially for those wearing loose-fitting swimwear.

‘In one case a stray eel found its way through the man’s genitals and into his kidney, and he ended up needing a three-hour operation,’ Nixon told the conference. ‘This is the sort of procedure that is coming your way.’

The alarming example is reportedly that of Zhang Nan, a 56-year-old man from Hubei province in China.

‘I climbed into the bath and I could feel the eels nibbling my body,’ Mr Nan said shortly after the incident two years ago.

‘But then suddenly I felt a severe pain and realised a small eel had gone into the end of my penis.’

A spokesman for the institute said that it was vital that any new beauty treatment was subjected to proper scrutiny by health professionals.

‘The CIEH is concerned when this or any new beauty treatment is being offered without a proper risk assessment to consider its impact on the public or the animals involved.

Without such a risk assessment, it is not possible to provide official guidance or advice that can help inform the public and health professionals.’

The beauty industry is beginning to turn its back on fish pedicures after customers raised concerns about the ethical treatment of animals.

Risk: Health experts have warned that 'fish spa pedicures' could spread diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C

However, the treatments are still being offered in some spas and at festivals and fairgrounds, according to the CIEH journal, Environmental Health News.

‘I have been to big events for the leisure industry and they [the treatments] are working their way into gyms and these sorts of places, so keep an eye out for those,’ Nixon warned.

‘Anyone involved in these sorts of treatment should have at least a very minimum national occupational standard at a level-two pedicure unit.’

Worry: Another growing concern is the many teeth-whitening procedures available on the market

In 2011 health experts warned that ‘fish spa pedicures’ – where tiny fish nibble dead skin away from customers’ feet - could spread diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C.

The government’s Health Protection Agency said those with diabetes, psoriasis or a weak immune system are particularly vulnerable and should not take part in the beauty craze at all.

But with Britons spending more than £5billion a year on beauty and grooming services at more than 15,000 beauty salons, regulating the industry and ensuring minimum training standards is proving a constant battle for inspectors.

Another growing concern is the many teeth-whitening procedures available on the market.

Beauty therapists are being sold expensive training courses but are not told the procedures can be performed only by dentists or dental hygienists.

Inspectors are also worried about the increasing use of hair-straightening products imported into the UK that have been found to contain dangerous levels of formaldehyde – a cancer-causing chemical.

Nixon said she knew of companies that had concealed the formaldehyde content in their products by referring to it as formalin or methylene glycol on their labels.
