NASA Explains What Exploded Over Russia

Russian Meteorite's Origin Traced To Deadly Apollo Asteroid Cluster

Meteorite

A team of astronomers have tracked down the origin of a meteorite which injured more than 1,000 people in Russia.

The rock smashed into Lake Chebarkul, near the Ural Mountains and the city of Chelyabinsk, smashing windows and causing havoc as it ripped through the sky.

But its passage was also captured in astonishing detail and clarity, largely thanks to the Russian trend to have CCTV cameras installed in cars.

Using this video footage, a team from Colombia have managed to work out where it came from - not only the direction in the sky but also its orbit around the Sun.

Jorge Zuluaga and Ignacio Ferrin said that they used relatively basic physics and maths to work out how fast the rock fell, and in which direction.

From there they were able to build a picture of its trajectory in space in an elliptical orbit around the sun, and traced its origin the the Apollo asteroid cluster.

Rocks from that region regularly cross Earth's orbit. Of the 9,700 near-Earth space rocks discovered by astronomers, more than 5,000 originate from this region.

Unfortunately, this likely means that it won't be the last threatening space rock to pass nearby - in fact it's certain than more will strike the Earth relatively soon (in cosmic terms).

The team said:
". In order to account for the uncertainties implicit in the determination of the trajectory of the body in the atmosphere, we use Monte Carlo methods to calculate the most probable orbital parameters. We use this result to classify the meteoroid among the near Earth asteroid families finding that the parent body belonged to the Apollo asteroids. Although semimajor axis and inclination of the preliminary orbit computed by us are uncertain, the rest of orbital elements are well constrained in this preliminary reconstruction."

Susan 'Goldie' Harvey Finally Laid To Rest In Lagos

Family, friends and colleagues of Nigeria’s Afro pop singer, Oluwabimpe Susan Harvey, popularly known as Goldie Harvey, today paid their last respect to the singer as she was buried at the Vaults and Gardens Cemetery, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The late singer, whose remains was placed in a brown MIC Casket, was brought into the premises in a R350 Mercedes Benz hearse at around 10:00am.

During the private funeral, Andrew Harvey, Goldie’s husband who surfaced few days after her death on 14 February, paid a moving tribute to his wife:

“Susan you walked into my life, it was like God sent you as a fresh breath. I still remember your response to my first love message. You said ‘Love killed Romeo; sent Diana to an early grave and killed Jack on the Titanic. Forget about love, just have friendship and live long. Overtime our love grew to a depth I have never known. You were the best years of my life, your smile, your desire to live your dream.”

Her siblings read both the first and second Bible readings before she was interred in one of the private vaults at the cemetery.

In his moving tribute, Goldie’s close friend and Channel O presenter, Denrele Edun, who was a shadow of himself, described the deceased “just as gorgeous now as when last I saw her. Her slightly disappearing figure and total loss from my sight is in me, not in her.”

“The Goldie I knew despite the World recognition, I would move mountains, I would break ceilings sell your legacy and you are the best friend I forever had’, I can hear you say to me, do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. Do not stand on my grave and cry. I am not there, I did not die,” teary-eyed Edun said.

Also paying tribute to one of his prized artiste, Keke Ogungbe, President, Kennis Music, stated: “Lovely and talented Oluwabimpe Goldie Susan, if I’m to start saying all I can’t finish. Though it’s painful, so lovely to have left on Valentine’s Day, May almighty God grant your soul eternal rest forever and ever in Jesus Name Amen.”

Others in attendance at the burial to pay their last respect to the singer are Chris Ubosi, Dele Momodu, Mayor Akinpelu, Kunle Bakare, Olisa Adibua, Jaywon, Eedris Abdulkareem, DJ Jimmy Jatt, KSB, Essence, Weird MC, ID Ogungbe, Gbenga Adeyinka 1st, eLDee the don, Julius Agwu, Freeze, Tiwa Savage and others.

Goldie died on the St. Valentine’s Day of Hypertensive heart disease some hours after returning from the 53th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, United States.

The autopsy carried out February 19 and signed by Dr. O.O Oyewole of the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine said she suffered a terminal ‘hypertensive heart disease’ which resulted to’ intracerebellar haemorrhage.’

Two Kids Found Dead As Mother Vanishes With Third Child

NOBODY who visited No. 1 Elias Odili Street, Abakaliki, would believe, as being claimed, that the two children who lay lifeless on the bed were matcheted to death by their own mother in the early hours of Wednesday February 20, 2013. Did she really do it?

At the time of filing this report, the whereabouts of the woman and her third child were unknown. Did she flee to escape the fate that befell her two children?

Mrs. Joy Uchaji, a middle-aged school teacher, married to a former leader of Ebonyi Legislative Council was alleged to have butchered her two children, Nneoma and Godwin Uchaji aged four and two years respectively at the home with a machete after which she packed her bags and fled.

When The Guardian visited the scene, the machete with which Mrs. Joy allegedly committed the act, lay innocently on top of the slain daughter.

Family members disclosed that the body of the boy was found on top of the bed with his neck almost severed from the body while the girl was found in the kitchen with machete cuts on her back.

Her husband, Mr. Chamberlain Uchaji, was not around as he was said to have travelled to Abuja where he secured an employment recently.

However, elder brother to Mr. Uchaji, Elias, told reporters that the incident was an ugly development in the family, stressing that until the husband and other members living outside Ebonyi returned, the family could not take any decision on next line of action.

Commenting on the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ebonyi State Command, Mr. Sylvester Igbo, a Deputy Superintendent of Police said the command received a report of the incident and had begun a search for the woman, adding that preliminary investigations by the Police indicated that the woman must have run to Lagos.

He said bodies of the slain children had been cleared to be deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, (FETHA) mortuary.

Teenager bags 6 years jail term for burying her own 2 year old baby alive...

AN Osogbo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday sentenced an 18-year-old mother of one, Mrs. Adeola Joseph, to a six-year imprisonment with hard labour for burying her only child alive for three days.

The court, presided over by Mr. Olusola Aluko, in its ruling, said the convict was unrepentant of her cruel action and hence, did not deserve to be in the midst of human beings.

Mrs. Joseph was said to have buried alive her only child, Fatia Nafiu, at her residence in Ijetu area, off Ilesa -Osogbo Road, Osogbo, in Osun state.

According to the Police Prosecutor, Mr. Solomon Oladele, Mrs. Joseph buried her child in the early hours of Monday, February 18, 2012 and the child was rescued after two days by a good Samaritan, Prophetess Tunrayo Akinwande, who lives around the area.

Oladele said the intervention of Prophetess Akinwande and other residents of the area, who exhumed Fatia from the grave and took her to the hospital, helped to save the innocent two- year-old baby who was still alive after two days in the grave.

According to the Prosecutor, the convict had through her actions committed an offence contrary to and punishable under sections 320 (1) and 509 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol 11, Laws of Osun state of Nigeria 2003.

The convict, who was arraigned on a three -count charge of attempted murder, felony and breach of peace pleaded for leniency.

She told the court that her parents were not favourably disposed to her marriage with the father of her child and she had since been living alone without assistance, hence her resolve to terminate the life of the toddler.

The convict also told the court that she decided to kill the baby due to her decision to relocate to Lagos in search of a job, without adding the child’s responsibility to her own.

It was gathered that the convict had made several attempts to kill the child before until her last attempt, which landed her in jail.

French children kidnapped 'by Boko Haram' in Cameroon

Seven French citizens, including four children, were kidnapped in Cameroon on Tuesday, amid a surge of attacks on French interests across West Africa since Paris ordered its country's troops into Mali to battle Islamists there.
French children kidnapped 'by Boko Haram' in Cameroon
Francois Hollande, the French president, pointed the finger at al-Qaeda allied fundamentalist group Boko Haram, based in neighbouring Nigeria, blaming them for the kidnapping Tuesday.

The seven hostages were taken from Cameroon's far north close to the Waza National Park and Lake Chad, both attractions for tourists on adventure holidays. The semi-arid area lies alongside the border with Nigeria, and Islamist strongholds in towns there, including Maiduguri, are less than 100 miles to the west.

It is nonetheless believed to be the first time that Nigeria's growing problem with Islamic fundamentalism, and kidnapping, has been exported into its generally stable neighbour.

"They have been taken by a terrorist group that we know and that is in Nigeria," Mr Hollande told reporters during a visit to Greece.

He added: "I see the hand of Boko Haram in that part of Cameroon."

Issa Tchiroma Bakary, Cameroon's information minister, said his government and security services were investigating the reports but would not immediately confirm details.

One of the adults is employed by GDF Suez. The French utility giant said the employee, based in the Cameroon capital Yaounde, and the family were on holiday in the north of the country.

A Western diplomat in the region told AFP that six armed kidnappers on three motorbikes abducted a couple, their four children and an uncle in the northern village of Dabanga near the Nigerian border.

The children are aged five, eight, 10 and 12, the diplomat said.

Mr Hollande said that his intelligence services said they suspected the group was being taken towards northern Nigeria, or had already been smuggled across the border.

A French engineer was kidnapped close to Katsina, a Nigerian town further west, in December. Eight other French nationals, mostly employees with its uranium miner Areva, have been held hostage in the region since 2010.

Seven other Westerners, including a British construction specialist, were kidnapped on Sunday from another northern Nigerian town.

The French president is facing increasing domestic pressure to justify ordering the operation in Mali, where 4,000 French troops helped stall an Islamist surge south towards the capital last month.

"France is in Mali, and it will continue until its mission is completed," Mr Hollande said. telegraph.co.uk

Explosion under the FESTAC Link Bridge .......Sand dredger killed, policeman injured

A sand dredger, Oladele Pius, was killed on Monday after an explosion under the FESTAC Link Bridge in Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Lagos State.

A police inspector, Akin Sunday, also sustained a serious injury in the explosion that caused panic in the area.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Pius, who was the branch Chairman of Sand Dredgers in the area, was torn apart.

According to eyewitnesses, rescue workers found it difficult to carry Pius’ remains and had to use shovels to pack them in different body bags.

They (eyewitness) said the inspector’s legs were shattered, while his eyes and hands were affected by the explosion.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the explosion which occurred at about 12pm, caused panic because many of the residents and passersby had speculated that the explosion might have been as a result of terrorists’ activities. They reportedly fled the area.

An eyewitness, who claimed to be the deceased’s colleague, said he (deceased) resumed work in the morning under the bridge, and having parked his vehicle, made for his duty post.

The eyewitness said some moments later, the deceased received a telephone call following which he drove out.

He said the deceased returned accompanied by a policeman and then called one of his workers to buy a local gin which he shared with the policeman

He said the policeman was leaving the area when the explosion occurred, killing Oladele on the spot and seriously injuring the policeman who had moved a few steps away before the device, connected with dry cell batteries and wires, detonated.

Dogo, one of the deceased’s workers, described him as a kind-hearted man, adding that he was survived by five children and two wives.

The policeman was however rushed to a nearby hospital

It could not be ascertained who planted the explosive, but the police denied that it was a bomb.

Commissioner of Police for the state Police Command, Umar Manko, said full investigation had commenced to unravel the cause of the explosion.

Manko however said preliminary investigation revealed that the explosion was caused by an electrical fault.

While briefing journalists at the state command headquarters on Monday, Manko urged residents not to panic but continue with their lawful businesses, assuring them that the police were committed to safety of lives and property in the state.

He said, “Contrary to people’s fear that it was a bomb blast, it was a mere electrical fault at the Amuwo Odofin Bridge. Anti-bomb experts have been called in to assess the situation and I will be adequately briefed later.

“From the investigation so far, it has been revealed that it was neither a terrorist attack nor an act of Boko Haram. It was also not a bomb blast.

“It is not a question of letter bomb. This is not an incident that will attract fear. The state is not under any attack from anywhere.”

The scene of the explosion had, however, been cordoned off by the Bomb Disposal Unit of the Nigeria Police and officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.

In the pursuit of riches, Kim Kardashian will travel the world.

And following her controversial trips to the Middle East and the Ivory Coast, the reality star headed to Nigeria on Sunday.

Despite staying less than a day in the city of Lagos the pregnant star was paid a reported $500,000 for her fleeting visit, angering some commentators in the African country.

Kim’s visit to Nigeria unfortunately coincided with the kidnapping of seven foreigners, including one Briton, by armed men in the north of the country. An Islamist group later claimed responsibility.

The mother-to-be was billed to ‘co-host’ the Love Like A Movie event with African R’n'B crooner Darey Art-Alade, for which tickets cost N100,000, or $640.

But according to local reports Kim stayed at the event for 45 minutes, making a 45-second statement on the microphone.

Independent Nigerian TV station Channels Television reported: ‘There were disappointments after Kim Kardashian came on stage for only 40 seconds.’

The channel posted pictures of the smiling star wearing a black leather dress, posing alongside the performers including 2Face, Waje, Banky W, Ice Prince, Mo’Eazy and Zaina.

Guardian blogger Jeremy Weate described how Kim’s visit was an example of the country’s economic elite ‘blowing its money on bling puffery while most of the country suffers’.

He wrote: ‘Ms Kardashian appeared, said, “Hey Naija” and vamoosed. The rumour was that she’d been paid 500,000 Benjamins for the honour of mixing with the petro-class.’
Commentators in the country made reference to Kim’s infamous sex tape as they queried why a woman of dubious ‘moral rating’ should be in the country at all.

This Day newspaper’s Eddy Odivwri wrote: ‘Many families are not exactly comfortable with her lifestyle, as she hardly cuts the image of a role model to a generation in need of a moral dress up.’

But Odivwri did welcome her visit as a sign that the country was an attractive destination to celebrities.

‘Despite what is considered as Nigeria’s many drawbacks, the nation remains yet a destination point to several international personages… the latest to visit… is Kim Kardashian, the world’s most famous American reality show celebrity.’

Kim was criticised for her brief marriage to Kris Humphries, with Charles Mgbolu for AllAfrica writing: ‘It is uncertain how much Kim is loved in Nigeria as she fell sour to a lot of her fans after her divorce with former hubby Kris Humphries in a marriage that lasted barely 72 days.’

And it wasn’t just in Nigeria that eyebrows were raised, with Ghana based site GhanaCelebrities.com writing: ‘My questions is; what is wrong with us Africans?

‘When did Kim Kardashian become so good at hosting that she has to be paid thousands of dollars and be brought to Nigeria to handle a concert?’
Kim seemed oblivious to the controversy, however, as she left on an Air France flight.

Looking tired she was later pictured arriving in Los Angeles, her bump hidden beneath a simple white shirt which she teamed with black trousers.
But she did manage a smile for the cameras, perhaps glad to be home.

The 32-year-old tweeted: ‘Just landed back home! 20 hrs of flying. No big deal.’

PHOTOS: Pastor Arrested with Fresh Human Parts in Lagos

Two persons, one of them said to be a prophet with a white garment church, have been arrested by the Police in Lagos, following the discovery of fresh human parts in their custody.
(See the fresh parts below)

Policemen attached to Ikotun division on patrol accosted two men at about 12: 30 p.m last Friday, with a Ghana-must-go bag. When they requested to know the content of the bag, one of the men bolted. When the bag was eventually opened, fresh human parts were found inside two containers....
The recovered parts included five fingers, a human heart, liver, kidney and intestines, all concealed in some plastics filled with water. The plastics were tied inside separate polythene bags and kept in the bag.

Apparently to avoid suspicion, the suspects added soup ingredients such as salt, tomatoes and two pairs of bathroom slippers in a separate nylon bag which they placed on top of the human parts.

However, during interrogation, the arrested suspect identified as Kunle Olaide, claimed the bag was given to him by his friend who bolted when they were stopped. On further interrogation, it was discovered that Kunle and his fleeing partner, slept in the church the previous night.

Kunle confessed to be coming from the church located in Egbe area Lagos when they were accosted by the policemen. His confessional statement led to the arrest of the prophet of the church, Dare Akinrosoye.

Sources at SCID said investigation so far revealed that their victim was recently killed. But the purpose and circumstances surrounding the killing were yet to be ascertained. Police sources said it was obvious the suspects were taking the human parts somewhere for spiritual 'operation'.

Rihanna's Fashion Woes @ Her River Island London Fashion Week Debut

Rihanna River Island

"Rihanna’s collection for River Island as brought forth in the London fashion week was a horror show," wrote The Daily Beast.
"It wasn't Rihanna Plane levels of bad, but it wasn't great," wrote Pedestrian TV.
Here's a few reasons we think it didn't go so well:
  1. RiRi was an hour late for her nine-minute fashion show. We know timeliness isn't de rigueur during fashion week, but making attendees wait a whole hour? Even we can't pretend to check emails on our iPhones for that long.
  2. Nipple-baring, crotch-flashing mesh outfits and bra tops aren't exactly what a stylish gal wants to throw on for a casual night out. The entire collection was a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.

  3. The whole thing was a little too heavy on the nineties vibe. It doesn't get more literal than a Baywatch-inspired red one piece.

  4. The River Island show wasn't part of the official London Fashion Week lineup. Unlike Katie Holmes' Holmes & Yang line and Victoria Beckham's critically-acclaimed collections that occupy respected slots on the schedule, Rihanna's clothes were already at a disadvantage before the show even started.

  5. Cara Delevingne sat front row. The 20-year-old model of the moment has become one of our favorite fashion girls, so it's a little disconcerting to see her becoming besties with a woman who tweets things like this.

  6. Rihanna didn't technically design the clothes. The singer worked with designer Adam Selman via email and phone calls and then attended fittings after samples were made, according to Vogue UK. So, um, did she even touch the fabric she draped the models in?

So there you have it. It wasn't the most seamless transition into the fashion world (get it?), and we have a feeling that shoppers won't be very forgiving either.
The question is: What did you think of Rihanna's debut collection for River Island? Take a look at some photos below and sound off in the comments!

Goldie Stole My Husband....Ifeoma Harvey(former best friend)

Just when you thought the drama is over more stories keeps developing and even goes deeper

89caba4716cc98b92dc0a526939c8f40

Now a woman named Ifeoma Harvey(pictured), has come out to say that Goldie Harvey stole her husband(Andrew Harvey)!

Ifeoma has taken to Facebook to say her part of the story where she claims that she and Goldie were best friends a while back. According to Ifeoma, Goldie waited for the opportune moment to elope with Andrew Harvey in Nigeria, while he was still married to Ifeoma. “She never knew that one day death would come calling,” says Ifeoma, “She rendered that man useless, took all his money and right now Andrew Harvey is lying in the hospital in Malaysia.”

This part of the story seems to check out with Andrew Harvey’s claim that he is currently in Malaysia. Ifeoma went on:

“Goldie went to Malaysia to visit the sick man before going to USA (for the Grammys) and came back to meet her mysterious death. Goldie is a liar, pretender and desperado. She wants to get money and fame at all cost… forced her trashy music down our throat, went to BBA and messed up with Prezzo… married woman indeed! Why is Andrew posting their so-called marriage pics now? Maybe the charm she used has cleared from his eyes! He should shut the hell up and pray for quick recovery from his sick bed in Malaysia. After that he can go back to London and beg his wife and two kids for forgiveness!”
