Would you share a bath with eels?....New exfoliating treatment that involves bathing in a tank of eels

Many people are prepared to go to increasingly extreme lengths to enhance their looks.

But the latest beauty fad, involving bathing in a tank of eels in order to exfoliate the skin, has been condemned by health inspectors as extremely dangerous.

The new treatment is just another in a bewildering array of beauty treatments currently making their way into spas and beauty salons, which experts say are often not regulated as they should be.

'Extremely dangerous': The latest beauty fad involves bathing in a tank of eels in order to exfoliate the skin

The technique, imported from China, involves immersing the full body into a bath of pencil-long eels – an extension of the fish pedicures that were popular in 2011.

Wendy Nixon, a health and safety consultant, last week told a conference hosted by the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health (CIEH), the body which represents health inspectors, that there were problems with the procedure, especially for those wearing loose-fitting swimwear.

‘In one case a stray eel found its way through the man’s genitals and into his kidney, and he ended up needing a three-hour operation,’ Nixon told the conference. ‘This is the sort of procedure that is coming your way.’

The alarming example is reportedly that of Zhang Nan, a 56-year-old man from Hubei province in China.

‘I climbed into the bath and I could feel the eels nibbling my body,’ Mr Nan said shortly after the incident two years ago.

‘But then suddenly I felt a severe pain and realised a small eel had gone into the end of my penis.’

A spokesman for the institute said that it was vital that any new beauty treatment was subjected to proper scrutiny by health professionals.

‘The CIEH is concerned when this or any new beauty treatment is being offered without a proper risk assessment to consider its impact on the public or the animals involved.

Without such a risk assessment, it is not possible to provide official guidance or advice that can help inform the public and health professionals.’

The beauty industry is beginning to turn its back on fish pedicures after customers raised concerns about the ethical treatment of animals.

Risk: Health experts have warned that 'fish spa pedicures' could spread diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C

However, the treatments are still being offered in some spas and at festivals and fairgrounds, according to the CIEH journal, Environmental Health News.

‘I have been to big events for the leisure industry and they [the treatments] are working their way into gyms and these sorts of places, so keep an eye out for those,’ Nixon warned.

‘Anyone involved in these sorts of treatment should have at least a very minimum national occupational standard at a level-two pedicure unit.’

Worry: Another growing concern is the many teeth-whitening procedures available on the market

In 2011 health experts warned that ‘fish spa pedicures’ – where tiny fish nibble dead skin away from customers’ feet - could spread diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C.

The government’s Health Protection Agency said those with diabetes, psoriasis or a weak immune system are particularly vulnerable and should not take part in the beauty craze at all.

But with Britons spending more than £5billion a year on beauty and grooming services at more than 15,000 beauty salons, regulating the industry and ensuring minimum training standards is proving a constant battle for inspectors.

Another growing concern is the many teeth-whitening procedures available on the market.

Beauty therapists are being sold expensive training courses but are not told the procedures can be performed only by dentists or dental hygienists.

Inspectors are also worried about the increasing use of hair-straightening products imported into the UK that have been found to contain dangerous levels of formaldehyde – a cancer-causing chemical.

Nixon said she knew of companies that had concealed the formaldehyde content in their products by referring to it as formalin or methylene glycol on their labels.

Cossy Orjiakor insures boobs for a whooping N256m

Nollywood actress, Cossy Orjiakor who has gained a sensational sex identity is currently a happy woman as she is set to hit another gold mine with her endowment.

The actress was reported to have agreed to a deal to insure her bloated mammary glands for a whooping $1.6million amounting to N256million.

The deal according to source, was introduced to her by an American friend who also dragged Enhanced Silicon Inc. responsible for insuring breasts of famous foreign celebrities into the deal. The company, which insured the bosóms of Pamela Anderson and Dolly Parton agreed to the deal just before Cossy’s recent birthday bash, where she displayed her endowments for the world to see. The booby actress will be travelling to Los Angeles in two weeks to sign on the dotted lines. “I specifically asked for $1.6 million,” Cossy was quoted as saying.

As part of the deal awaiting her signature, there will be limits on how many men and women who would touch her bósoms each month. Also, the bósoms have all been given names and must now be treated as people in future movie roles. That means that Enhanced Silicon Inc. will determine how much a movie producer will pay each bosóm for an appearance in a movie. “The downside of the deal is that I may get dressed’, Cossy added.

Cossy seems pretty excited about the deal as sources maintained that each of the endowment will be named and anyone who prefers to touch will have to pay for it just as Enhanced Silicon Inc. will henceforth, decide the amount producers will pay per breast, for appearance in a movie.

Gang tortured and raped African migrants whose boat sank off Italian island, Lampedusa, with the loss of more than 360 lives

The tragedy has not stopped migrants boarding unseaworthy boats in the hope of reaching Europe

Migrant tragedy

People traffickers tortured and raped African migrants whose boat later sank off Lampedusa with the loss of more than 360 lives, Italian police say.

The police have arrested a Somali man on Lampedusa accused of committing crimes with the armed gang.

Most of the victims on 3 October were Eritreans and Somalis. Their fishing boat capsized near Lampedusa, a tiny Italian island off North Africa.

The migrants each paid thousands of dollars to the gang, police said.

The gang moves people across the Sahara to Libya, where they are detained in a camp until they pay at least $3,000 (£1,866), police said.

The migrants have told the police that torture and rape goes on at the camp, the BBC's Alan Johnston reports from Rome.

Once the migrants make their payment, they are handed on to another organisation which - in return for more money - arranges a boat journey to Europe.

Motives unclear

The alleged captain of the Lampedusa boat, a Tunisian man named Khaled Bensalam, is being held in Sicily.

The 24-year-old Somali suspect was arrested after arriving on Lampedusa on 25 October with a group of migrants.

As he entered a migrant reception centre, he was attacked by some survivors of the disaster, police said. There were 155 survivors of the tragedy.

The migrants said they recognised him as one of the leaders of the group that had arranged their long and disastrous journey. He is now facing charges relating to kidnapping, sexual violence and people smuggling.

It is not yet clear why the suspect made the journey to Italy and put himself at risk of being identified by migrants that he allegedly mistreated. But the police say he might have been fleeing tensions within his people-smuggling network.

Another theory is that he may have sought to consolidate links with criminal partners in Italy. Or he might have simply decided that he too wanted to make a new life in Europe, our correspondent says.

Italian media say the Somali man's arrest followed investigations by Sicilian police and anti-Mafia police based in Rome. He is now being questioned in Sicily.

TRAGEDY: Multiple Deaths In Alaba As Robbers Kill Many In Broad Daylight (GRAPHIC PHOTOS)

According to reports, armed robbers attacked the Alaba market on Tuesday leaving many dead.

The market was in a state of violence on the 5th of November, when the robbers stormed in and began killing people.

Reports have it that a young lady who was conveying a large sum of money which belonged to her boss to the bank, with two mobile police officers was double crossed by armed robbers and shot several times.

One of the police officers was also shot and the second one managed to escape with bullet injuries. As the robbers made to escape, they were interrupted, which made them start shooting randomly and killing people.

Apparently, this was not the first time the lady and the mobile police officers will be conveying such a large amount of money to the bank before the unfortunate incident took place on Tuesday. The person she worked for is believed to be one of the rechest people in Alaba market. The police had since moved the dead bodies to the mortuary.
