NewYork: Nigerian cab driver dies as passenger stabs him in the eye with an UMBRELLA during an arguement

  • Slain livery cab identified as 54-year-old Orji-Ama Uro, a father of five from Nigeria
  • Attackers did not take Uro's wallet or cash after stabbing him in the eye
  • Family say he came to U.S. 10 years ago hoping to open a shoe store

A New York City livery cab driver has been savagely killed after a passenger stabbed him through the eye with an umbrella, piercing his brain, during a dispute.

Police say the mortally wounded man, identified as 54-year-old Orji-Ama Uro, of Rosedale, Queens, continued driving for about a block before crashing into two parked cars in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn Thursday.

Uro was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to the victim's family, Uro was a father of five who emigrated to the U.S. from Nigeria 10 years ago in pursuit of the American dream, which for him was opening his own shore store.

Chinedoum Agwu, Uro's sister-in-law, told DNAInfo.com that the 54-year-old cab driver leaves behind two sons and three daughters between the ages of 16 and 23.

She described her slain brother-in-law as a very hardworking and responsible man who regularly attended services at a Jehovah's Witness church.

Agwu, who was supposed to host a Father's Day dinner for Uro and other relatives this Sunday, now has nothing left to do but weep for her brother-in-law and wonder why would anyone hurt him.

Gruesome crime scene: Police who responded to a car crash discovered livery cab driver Orji-Ama Uro bleeding to death from a wound in his eye

Rough neighbourhood: The savage attack took place near the intersection of Lott Avenue and Thomas S. Boyland Street in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn

'What would they get from a cab driver? If he had money, he wouldn't drive a cab,' she said.

The man was driving a 2000 gold Mercury Grand Marquis with New Jersey license plates that was registered to Freedom Car Service, according to investigators.

Surveillance video from a nearby store captured a man and woman in their mid-20s calmly emerging from the cab and walking away as the vehicle rolled down the street.

Police are currently searching for the suspects, who remain at large. The livery cab had no partition or camera inside.

The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers is offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to the suspects’ arrest. The group 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care is offering another $2,000.

The gruesome incident took place at around 5.30pm Thursday near the intersection of Lott Avenue and Thomas S. Boyland Street in Brooklyn.

Tragic end: After being stabbed in the eye, Uro continued driving before he crashed the sedan across the street from a schoolyard

Investigation: Police are viewing surveillance footage from the area and talking to witnesses as they are working to track down the suspects

Police officers who responded to a report of a car crash were stunned to discover a man slumped on his side in the driver's seat gushing blood from a stab wound in his eye.

No weapon has been recovered from the scene, but investigators believe the perpetrator stabbed Uro with the metal tip of an umbrella.

Following the brutal attack, witnesses say the wounded motorist attempted to drive away, but ended up crashing his cab into two parked cars before coming to rest in a private driveway across the street from a schoolyard.

‘I was cooking in kitchen and I heard a loud bang, so I ran to my window. I saw the cab driver bleeding like crazy. His face was full of blood,’ neighbor Lena Taylor told the New York Post. ‘I called 911 and they arrived fast and cut him out of the car. He already looked dead.’

Jose Perez, who works in a bodega across the street, told the New York Times that he heard the sound of an engine, followed by a crash. He approached the cab, peered inside and saw the driver leaning over the wheel.

‘I saw a guy with a lot of blood on his face,’ he recalled. ‘He was coughing up blood.’

Police say it appears that the drivers got into a dispute with his passengers, a man and a woman, who were later seen walking away from the scene.

Murky motive: Police say the driver still had his wallet and cash on him after the attack, suggesting that it was not a robbery gone awry

Uro's wallet and cash were still on him when he was discovered bleeding to death inside the car, suggesting to police that the motive of the attack was not a robbery, DNAInfo.com reported.

New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers President Fernando Mateo told NY1 that the victim's driver identification card was missing.

'It was a terrible way for a man to die,' he told the paper.

Nicole Scherzinger stunning in her bodycon outfit for the latest X Factor auditions

She's been romantically linked to stars including Harry Styles and James Arthur.

But Caroline Flack admitted she was confused about her sexuality after seeing Nicole Scherzinger's outfit choice for the latest round of X Factor auditions in Manchester on Friday.

The former Pussycat Dolls star looked incredible in a bodycon purple Herve Leger dress which clung to her enviably toned figure as she posed up outside the Old Trafford Centre.

Dazzling: Nicole Scherzinger looked so incredible in her purple dress for the latest round of X Factor auditions that she left Caroline Flack confused about her sexuality

Show off a trim figure in a body con frock

Figure-hugging: The dress highlighted Nicole's enviably toned shape in all the right places.

Nicole teamed her sexy dress with a pair of sky-high black heels and sunglasses, with her raven hair swept back into a high ponytail for the occasion.

And after catching sight of Nicole's outfit choice, The Xtra Factor host Caroline tweeted: 'Nicole looks so beautiful today it's confusing my sexuality....'

Nicole's outfit was significantly more glamorous than the shirt and leather trousers she opted for for the first day of auditions in Manchester on Thursday.

Careful! The low-cut style of the dress meant Nicole had to keep checking to ensure she didn't have an embarrassing malfunction.

Purple princess: Nicole's dress clung to her feminine shape, but was also very revealing'

That looks like a fun job! A member of the X Factor team held an umbrella over Nicole to ensure she didn't get wet in the rain

While fans are sure to want to get their hands on Nicole's dress, they will have to wait a little longer as the £4,700 Herve Leger dress is from the Autumn Winter 2013 catwalk show and won't be available to buy until September.

However, the 34-year-old struggled in the rainy weather, and enlisted a member of her entourage to hold an umbrella for her to ensure she didn't get wet and ruin her look.

Despite the gloomy outlook, Nicole still wore sunglasses to add to her glamorous look.

Legs that go on forever! Caroline Flack wore a denim Warehouse minidress and £55 Clarks shoes, but was bowled over by Nicole's outfit choice

Admission: Caroline expressed her love of Nicole's appearance on her Twitter page

But it seems that the tight nature of Nicole's dress caused issues for the star at points, as she was seen struggling to hold up the low neckline to maintain her modesty as she posed up for photographers.

Nicole is no doubt hoping for similar success on this year's show after her two acts James Arthur and Jahmene Douglas made it to the final - with James crowned the eventual winner.

But she will have strong competition from Sharon Osbourne, who is returning to the panel hoping for glory this time around.

Suited and booted: Sharon Osbourne wore an unusual grey jacket over her white top and black trousers for the auditions

Here come the boys: Gary Barlow wore a youthful T-shirt while Louis Walsh paired his jeans with a suit jacket and smart shirt

As she arrived for the Manchester auditions on Friday, Sharon looked chic in a white top and black trousers, teamed with an unusual grey jacket.

The 60-year-old finished off her look with her red hair swept back, and went for a glamorous look with her make-up with a smokey eye and pink lip.

Meanwhile, Gary Barlow continued to embrace his youthful side as he sported yet another trendy T-shirt with grey trousers, as Louis Walsh stuck to his usual style in jeans and a black jacket.

Kim Kardashian: How She Knows The Cheating Rumours Are Lies

Kim Kardashian Kanye West Cheat

While Leyla Ghobadi, a 24-year-old Montreal-based model, alleges she slept with Kanye Westafter his concert in July 2012, we’ve been told that Kanye actually left the venue with Kim Kardashian, who was in attendance.

Kim Kardashian: Kanye West Didn’t Cheat — Here’s How She Knows

Jonathan Cheban, Kim’s best friend, spoke toHollywoodLife.com’s Editor-in-Chief Bonnie Fuller on her Hollywood Life show on SiriusXM Stars 106 on July 13 and said that he was with Kim all day on Wednesday, June 12 (the same day that Leyla’s allegations were made public).
“We were laughing yesterday morning [while filming KUWTK]. You know, there’s always a new scam artist; the ‘scam artist of the day’ as I like to call it, so that one was the funniest one,” the entrepreneur said.
Jonathan told Bonnie that Kim didn’t even think about the cheating allegations for rest of the day — it was a nonissue.
Kim’s confidante went to Atlantic City’s HQ Nightclub on July 7, but he says Kanye didn’t go, as Leyla claimed. He said:
“I was with [Kanye and Kim] that night and I know they never stepped foot into that nightclub. I actually begged her and I went there with one of my security guys, and Kim and Kanye were at the concert and they went straight to their room. Nene [Leakes] was with us that night too, and she made it halfway down there and was like ‘I’m not going, I’m going back to my room.’ There’s pictures of us on the balcony, Kim and I, and I left, went to the club and Kim did not want to go to the club and her and Kanye went back to the room and that was it. It was the opening of the club, so believe me, if Kim or Kanye were at that club, you would have definitely read about it because the PR people would have blasted it all over the place that he was there for the opening night. We walked into the club for 15 minutes, and went, hung out with Nene, back outside and then I went to the room and I know they never went to the club.”
Plus, Jonathan notes that Kanye was so hot on Kim at the time (and he still is), so there was no way he would ever cheat on her. Jonathan also said that Kanye is so picky about his women, that he wouldn’t have gone near Leyla.
Furthermore, Kanye is disgusted by Leyla’s allegations and is insisting to friends that he is totally loyal to Kim, HollywoodLife.com has learned exclusively. Here’s what Kanye told one close associate: ”The b**** is crazy cuz, aint s*** popping off with no b**** other than Kim.”

Facebook Post and Photo Reunites Mother And Son After 22 Years

On June 3, Cherie Alvis posted pictures to Facebook of her infant son -- a baby she'd given up for adoption 22 years ago. The mother from Lufkin, Tex., also included a picture of herself holding a sign that read "I am looking for my son. He was born June 3, 1991. He's 22 today. Birth name Joseph Edward Saenz."

According to KTRE, four days later, her son -- now a young man named Clark Alldridge -- wrote on Alvis' Facebook timeline, "Here I am, Mom."

On Saturday, they reunited for the first time.

(Story Continues Below)

Alvis, who was 17 when she gave up her son, told the station that a complete stranger, Sherry Riley, was the reason behind their reunion.

After seeing Alvis' Facebook post -- which had been widely shared -- Riley decided to help.

She looked up state records using the birthdate provided by Alvis and finally found Alldridge on Facebook. She then directed him to his mother's page.

The 22-year-old said he'd always known he was adopted and that he understood why Alvis did what she did.

"She basically had to have another family keep me alive and I'm proud of her for that," he told KTRE. "I feel like everybody has to make hard choices at one point and some are harder than others."

On Sunday, Alvis posted more pictures to Facebook of the family reunion.

"Our family is complete," she wrote under one photograph of her and Alldrige. "I am so glad he's home. I can't stop staring at him."

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde's husband’s scrap plane causes panic in Lagos

The plane and the onlookers.
The plane and the onlookers.

A scrap plane formerly owned by the late Apostle Gabriel Oduyemi of Bethel Ministries, Ajah, Lagos, caused panic in the city on Thursday as rumour spread that another aircraft had crashed in Lagos.

It was learnt that the plane, which was recently released to Capt Matthew Ekeinde, husband of Nollywood star, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, was being dragged to Badagry area of the state before its tyre burst. The incident forced the new owner to dump the plane in a nearby filling station.

Hundreds of residents trooped out with their smart phones and camera, and queued behind the gate of Dapsey Oil filling station at Igando where the plane was parked.

A senior employee of the filling station said the plane, with registration number N972TF, was being towed from Muritala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja to Badagry when one of the tyres burst.

He said, “The plane was brought here around 2am after one of its tyres burst. It was being towed by a red vehicle, but after it got to Igando, they discovered it would be difficult to get it to its destination with burst tyre, which was why they brought it here.”

The Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the police provided escort for the plane.

He said, “About 12.45am, the command got a directive to escort the jet from MMIA Ikeja to Badagry by road.

“The operation was led by one Capt. Matthew Ekeinde, but in the process of the journey, one of the jet’s tyres burst at College Bus Stop and the jet could not move.

“It was parked at Dapsey Filling Station along Igando for repairs. We have provided security for the plane until it is moved to Badagry.”

PUNCH Metro observed that men of The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps were on the ground to “ensure the safety of people” living in the area.

The Igando Divisional Police Officer, Adeoye Olugbemiga, came with his team around 12pm to control on-lookers.

In a short time, some of the residents turned the scene into an amusement park and began to pose and take shots near the plane.

One of our correspondents observed that the plane’s two wings had been chopped off and the cockpit was stuffed with nylons.

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Nnamdi Udoh, in a statement, said the aircraft had long been within the agency’s facility till Wednesday night when it was removed.

Udoh said, “The aircraft that was sighted by the residents was actually a junk one belonging to the late Apostle Gabriel Oduyemi of Bethel Ministries.

“The aircraft was actually released to Capt Ekeinde who will be using it for educational purposes in Badagry, Lagos.”

Ekeinde confirmed on the telephone that the scrap plane belonged to him.

He said, “The aircraft will be situated in a multipurpose and entertainment centre which wlll be open very soon.

“When opened, the centre will be the first of its kind in West Africa.”

Why we prefer live human beings – Suspected human parts dealer

LAGOS — Operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja have arrested three fleeing members of a syndicate who allegedly specialized in selling live humans and decomposing human parts for money rituals.

Their arrest came barely three weeks after some of their members were paraded at the Lagos State Police Command, where they confessed to have sold live human beings for N40,000, hands—N4,000 and head—N8,000.

Those recently arrested are Gazali Akewadola (60), the native doctor who allegedly offered N40,000 for a live human being, Alfa Taofeek Akinola (35) and Kazeem Sanni (25).

The suspects

To the bewilderment of all, Gazali confessed that live human beings were cheaper than buying dead human parts, saying all parts of a live human being are vital in the preparation of money ritual.

For instance, he said a life human being was bought for N40,000, “but at the end of the day, you get a lot of expensive parts from it. Aside that, it is even more potent because the efficacy of the charm or concoction prepared with live human parts cannot be compared with the ones prepared with dead parts.

“When a life human being is killed, one will get fresh blood which is used in preparing some charms. The same body will also give you hairs from private part, head and some mustache which are used for other ritual purposes. The private part is also very useful for the preparation of effective concoction. The head, flesh intestines, liver, heart, eyes, lips and tongues can be used for pepper soup which is usually very delicious than that of animal meat. I usually take the pepper soup so as to assure those who patronize us that it is not harmful. It also fortifies one spiritually.

“If you buy a full human being for N30,000 or N40,000 and pieces it, you will end up getting N100,000 or more because you will get more than 10 parts that will yield more money for you.”

Gazali who hails from Folahan, Ado-Odo in Owode Yewa Local Government Area of Ogun State, further said: “I am an Islamic teacher and a cleric. I own an Islamic school in Owode Yewa. I am also married with eight children. I am also a native doctor. I cure people of their ailments and help those who want to get rich quick, by using human parts to prepare charms and concoctions for them.

We use soft bones to cure epilepsy

“Most of the human parts I bought were sold to me by Kazeem Sanni. He used to sell dead human head between N3,000 and N8000, depending on the market price. The soft bones that can easily be grinded into powder are very cheap. It is just for N1,000. It is used to cure ailments like epilepsy.”

Asked why he did not use any of his children since he has eight of them, he said that would reduce the potency of the ritual concoction, adding that its potency depended solely on strangers being used. He said their victims were usually abducted from Lagos State and beyond, with the use of charms.

He further disclosed that aside the N40,000 paid to Sanni to get him a live human being, he gave him another N5,000 and a charm to hypnotize the male victims. But he said the plan almost failed as Sanni was almost caught. He, however, expressed regrets that despite the use of human parts to make other people rich, he ended up not only being poor but arrested along the line.

Money ritual charm changed my level

The second suspect, Alfa Taofeek, who is also an indigene of Owode Yewa in Ogun State confessed to have bought a human head from the third suspect, Kazeem, which he grinded and mixed with local gin.

According to him, “it was to enable me get rich. I am a Muslim cleric and I have been making people rich through this means but became jealous at a point and decided to get rich as well, since I was unable to get enough money from my clients.

“After drinking the concoction prepared with a human head, I got more customers and made more money. I even threw parties on a monthly basis to celebrate my new level.

“I also used part of the money to sponsor the graduation ceremony of some of my students in the Islamic school known as Alfa Taofeek Islamic School, at Owode Yewa.”

Customs officers lured me into money rituals

On his part, the third suspect, Kazeem Sanni, claimed to have opted for the money ritual business due to frustration from Customs men.

He said: “At a point, business was no longer moving because Customs men at the border were always seizing the goods, at the end of which their owners would force me to pay for them. I became frustrated even contemplated selling my father’s landed property. I decided to consult Alfa Taokeek Akinola to find out the cause of my predicament. He instructed me to get a human head in order to be rich. After that, he requested a live human being. I attempted kidnapping someone so that I can cut off his head but it was not possible. He then instructed me to exhume dead body from the graves which I did and got him three at the rate of N3,000 each.”

Their arrest, as explained by spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, was in compliance with the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko’s directive to SARS Commander, Abba Kyari, to get the fleeing suspects, after the arrest of three members of the syndicate on May 15, 2013, with human parts.

School proprietor caught having sex with 11-year-old pupil

Residents of Agric Olope area of Ado Ekiti have apprehended the proprietor of a private Nursery and Primary School, who was found in a bush allegedly having sex with a pupil of his school.

The incident happened on Monday after school hours.

Our correspondent gathered on Wednesday that the proprietor, identified as Mr. Tunde Ibitoye, picked the girl and another pupil of the same school and was taking them home in his car when he stopped at a deserted place and went into the bush pretending to be defecating.

An eyewitness, who said he caught the suspect in the act, said some minutes after the man went inside the bush, he called the victim to bring him tissue to clean up.

The eyewitness, who identified himself as Kayode Ayeni, said he became curious when he saw the girl going inside the bush knowing full well that a man had first gone into the bush some minutes earlier.

He said he traced the girl’s movement and found the man half naked and the girl also undressed and was in a compromising position.

Ayeni claimed that the proprietor was having carnal knowledge of the girl when he found the two of them inside the bush.

The argument between the eyewitness and the proprietor was said to have attracted a crowd of passersby and residents to the scene.

The suspect was said to have been beaten up and escaped being lynched due to the arrival of some policemen at the scene.

The policemen, who stormed the scene, dispersed the crowd and took the suspect away.

When contacted, the state command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi, said Ibitoye had been arrested for “defiling an 11-year-old pupil,” adding that the suspect was currently being interrogated by the police

The PPRO said the girl told police investigators that the proprietor had sex with her.

He added that the girl confessed that the last act was the fourth time the proprietor would be having sex with her.

He also said the girl’s father told the police that there was a time he noticed blood stain on his daughter’s clothes but the man thought it was early menstruation.

The proprietor, however, insisted that he did not have sex with the girl but was just assisting her home after the school hours.

But Babayemi said the girl had been taken to a hospital for medical examination, saying the result would be made public when it was out.

Babayemi said, “There is a man in our custody who was said to be caught while having sex with an 11-year-old pupil. The girl has been taken to hospital for examination and we are expecting the result.

“We are investigating to see if we can find other girls who the man might have defiled. If we find any, it would further corroborate the allegation. But we advise parents to alway ensure that their children are put in custody of responsible people.”

Stress can cause permanent damage to a man's sperm - and affect the mental health of his children

Anxiety: Suffering from stress can cause a permanent genetic change to a man's sperm (stock image)
Anxiety: Stress can cause a permanent genetic change to men's sperm and even alter how their offspring's brains develop (stock image)

Stress can cause permanent damage to a man's sperm and even stunt his children's brain development, a new study has found.

Researchers have discovered that suffering anxiety or depression as an adult, teenager or even as a child could cause a lasting genetic change in a man's sperm.

Scientists conducting a study on mice found that sperm damage caused by stress leads to offspring developing a 'blunted reaction to stress' - a trait associated with several mental disorders.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine say this is the first time a link has been found between stress-related diseases potentially being passed from a father to his children.

Previous studies have concentrated on how environmental challenges - such as diet, drug abuse, and chronic stress - felt by mothers during pregnancy can affect their offspring's neurodevelopment and increase the risk of certain diseases.

In this study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, male mice were exposed to six weeks of chronic stress, before breeding, either throughout puberty or only in adulthood.

Examples of stress include suddenly being moved to another cage, being exposed to predator odour, noise or a foreign object in their cage.

Male mice are ideal for such an experiment because they do not participate in offspring rearing, meaning any external factors outside of germ-cell formation are essentially eliminated.

A team of researchers led by Professor Tracy Bale found that stress among male mice prompted a genetic change in their sperm that re-programmed a part of their offspring’s brain.

They found that offspring from paternal stress groups displayed significantly blunted levels of the stress hormone corticosterone - in humans, it’s cortisol - in response to stress.

Professor Bale said: 'It didn’t matter if dads were going through puberty or in adulthood when stressed before they mated. We’ve shown here for the first time that stress can produce long-term changes to sperm that reprogram offspring brains.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania carried out a test on male mice - finding that their sperm underwent a genetic change after they were exposed to stress

'These findings suggest one way in which paternal-stress exposure may be linked to such neuropsychiatric diseases.'

But researchers also point out that a reduced physiological stress response may reflect some evolutionary benefit passed on to offspring to ensure survival in what is expected to be a more stressful environment.

Professor Bale added: 'Whether such diminished stress reactivity would be detrimental or beneficial to offspring likely depends on the environment into which they were born, as well as genetic background factors.'

Miracle! Nigerian cook survives 60 hours under sea in shipwreck air bubble

  • WARRI, Nigeria, June 12 (Reuters) - After two days trapped in freezing cold water and breathing from an air bubble in an upturned tugboat under the ocean, Harrison Okene was sure he was going to die. Then a torch light pierced the darkness.

Nigerian cook tells how he survived for three days trapped under sunken ship

Ship's cook Okene, 29, was on board the Jascon-4 tugboat when it capsized on May 26 due to heavy Atlantic ocean swells around 30 km (20 miles) off the coast of Nigeria, while stabilising an oil tanker filling up at a Chevron platform.

Of the 12 people on board, divers recovered 10 dead bodies while a remaining crew member has not been found.

Somehow Okene survived, breathing inside a four foot high bubble of air as it shrunk in the waters slowly rising from the ceiling of the tiny toilet and adjoining bedroom where he sought refuge, until two South African divers eventually rescued him.

"I was there in the water in total darkness just thinking it's the end. I kept thinking the water was going to fill up the room but it did not," Okene said, parts of his skin peeling away after days soaking in the salt water.

"I was so hungry but mostly so, so thirsty. The salt water took the skin off my tongue," he said. Seawater got into his mouth but he had nothing to eat or drink throughout his ordeal.

At 4:50 a.m. on May 26, Okene says he was in the toilet when he realised the tugboat was beginning to turn over. As water rushed in and the Jascon-4 flipped, he forced open the metal door.

"As I was coming out of the toilet it was pitch black so we were trying to link our way out to the water tidal (exit hatch)," Okene told Reuters in his home town of Warri, a city in Nigeria's oil-producing Niger Delta.

"Three guys were in front of me and suddenly water rushed in full force. I saw the first one, the second one, the third one just washed away. I knew these guys were dead."

What he didn't know was that he would spend the next two and a half days trapped under the sea praying he would be found.

Turning away from his only exit, Okene was swept along a narrow passageway by surging water into another toilet, this time adjoining a ship's officers cabin, as the overturned boat crashed onto the ocean floor. To his amazement he was still breathing.

FISH FEASTED ON THE DEAD

Okene, wearing only his underpants, survived around a day in the four foot square toilet, holding onto the overturned washbasin to keep his head out of the water.

He built up the courage to open the door and swim into the officer's bedroom and began pulling off the wall panelling to use as a tiny raft to lift himself out of the freezing water.

He sensed he was not alone in the darkness.

"I was very, very cold and it was black. I couldn't see anything," says Okene, staring into the middle distance.

"But I could perceive the dead bodies of my crew were nearby. I could smell them. The fish came in and began eating the bodies. I could hear the sound. It was horror."

What Okene didn't know was a team of divers sent by Chevron and the ship's owners, West African Ventures, were searching for crew members, assumed by now to be dead.

Then in the afternoon of May 28, Okene heard them.

"I heard a sound of a hammer hitting the vessel. Boom, boom, boom. I swam down and found a water dispenser. I pulled the water filter and I hammered the side of the vessel hoping someone would hear me. Then the diver must have heard a sound."

Divers broke into the ship and Okene saw light from a head torch of someone swimming along the passageway past the room.

"I went into the water and tapped him. I was waving my hands and he was shocked," Okene said, his relief still visible.

He thought he was at the bottom of the sea, although the company says it was 30 metres below.

The diving team fitted Okene with an oxygen mask, diver's suit and helmet and he reached the surface at 19:32, more than 60 hours after the ship sank, he says.

Okene says he spent another 60 hours in a decompression chamber where his body pressure was returned to normal. Had he just been exposed immediately to the outside air he would have died.

The cook describes his extraordinary survival story as a "miracle" but the memories of his time in the watery darkness still haunt him and he is not sure he will return to the sea.

"When I am at home sometimes it feels like the bed I am sleeping in is sinking. I think I'm still in the sea again. I jump up and I scream," Okene said, shaking his head.

"I don't know what stopped the water from filling that room. I was calling on God. He did it. It was a miracle." (Editing by Tim Cocks and Giles Elgood)

They say she suddenly started acting bizarre, tore her clothes and started confessing how she employed diabolical means for the growth of her business.

In her confession, she said she mixes water used to bathe corpses with her food, as well as water from her private part and menstruation blood. She said she did all these to attract customers whose "destinies" she used for the growth of her business and riches.

She then ran around town naked, confessing her atrocities, appearing to have lost her sanity.

The news of her confession spread around the area, and some of her customers (including Okada men) and angry onlookers descended on her and gave her the beating of her life, before Police men intervened and took her away.

7 Fascinating Near-Death Experiences

Thousands of stories from people who were clinically dead, but then came back to life, share similarities: a warm white light, a tunnel, and dead friends or family welcoming them. Check out some of the most amazing near-death experiences on record.

Anita Moorjani's NDE, and her amazing recovery from terminal cancer & coma

Anita Moorjani's NDE, and her amazing recovery from terminal cancer & coma
Anita Moorjani, an ethnic Indian woman from Hong Kong, had end stage cancer (Hodgkin's Lymphoma) and was being cared for at home, but on the morning of February 2, 2006 she did not wake up. She had fallen into a coma. Doctors said she would not make it beyond the next 36 hours since her organs were no longer functioning and her body had started to swell up, creating open skin lesions. In spite of this, Anita saw and heard the conversations between her husband and the doctors that were taking place outside her room about 40 feet away down a hallway. She also saw her brother on a plane, having heard the news that she was dying, coming to see her. Both things were later confirmed.

Then she claims to have "crossed over to another dimension, where I was engulfed in a total feeling of love. I also experienced extreme clarity of why I had the cancer, why I had come into this life in the first place, what role everyone in my family played in my life in the grand scheme of things, and generally how life works. I realized what a gift life was, and that I was surrounded by loving spiritual beings, who were always around me even when I did not know it. I found out that my purpose now would be to live ‘heaven on earth' using this new understanding, and also to share this knowledge with other people."

In her now famous book, "Dying to be me", Anita explains how she "had the choice of whether to come back into life, or go towards death. I became aware that if I chose life, my body would heal very quickly. I then started to understand how illnesses start on an energetic level before they become physical. I became aware that everything going on in our lives was dependent on this energy around us, created by us. Nothing was real – we created our surroundings, our conditions, etc. depending where this “energy” was at. If I chose life, the results would show that my organs were functioning normally. If I chose death, the results would show organ failure as the cause of death, due to cancer. I was able to change the outcome of the tests by my choice. I made my choice, and as I started to wake up (in a very confused state, as I could not at that time tell which side of the veil I was on), the doctors came rushing into the room with big smiles on their faces saying to my family 'Good news – we got the results and her organs are functioning – we can't believe it!'. After that, I began to recover rapidly."

Doctors were quite surprised and, once Anita became stable, they started tracking down the lymph nodes they saw when she entered the hospital. Tests had shown swollen lymph nodes and tumors the size of lemons extending from the base of her skull all the way to her lower abdomen, but doctors found none. They did a bone marrow biopsy, again to find the cancer activity so they could adjust the chemotherapy according to the disease, but there wasn't any in the bone marrow. Because they were unable to understand what was going on, they made her undergo test after test, all of which Anita passed easily. She then had a full body scan, and because they could not find anything, they made the radiologist repeat it again.

"Because of my experience, I am now sharing with everyone I know that miracles are possible in your life every day. After what I have seen, I realize that absolutely anything is possible, and that we did not come here to suffer. Life is supposed to be great, and we are very, very loved. The way I look at life has changed dramatically, and I am so glad to have been given a second chance to experience 'heaven on earth.'"

A neurosurgeon's NDE, trying to prove consciousness is independent from the brain

A neurosurgeon's NDE, trying to prove consciousness is independent from the brain
Eben Alexander, a neurosurgeon from Duke University, is the famous author of The New York Times best-selling autobiographical book "Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife" (2012), in which he asserts that his out of body and near death experience (NDE) while in a meningitis-induced coma in 2008 proves that consciousness is independent of the brain, that death is an illusion, and that an eternity of perfect splendor awaits us beyond the grave — complete with angels, clouds, and departed relatives, but also including butterflies and beautiful girls in peasant dress.

According to him, the current understanding of the mind “now lies broken at our feet ”— for “What happened to me destroyed it, and I intend to spend the rest of my life investigating the true nature of consciousness and making the fact that we are more, much more, than our physical brains as clear as I can, both to my fellow scientists and to people at large.” Alexander's book was excerpted in a Newsweek magazine cover story in October 2012.

According to his critics, "his NDE occurred not during his coma, but as he was surfacing from the coma and his cortex was returning to full function. It is curious that he does not allow this obvious and natural explanation, but instead insists on a supernatural one." The author responded that "only isolated pockets of deep cortical neurons were still sputtering, but no broad networks capable of generating anything like what we call 'consciousness' were."

90 Minutes in Heaven, the story of Reverend Don Piper

90 Minutes in Heaven, the story of Reverend Don Piper

In 1989, Reverend Don Piper of Pasadena, California was travelling in a car when it was crushed by an 18-wheeler in a head-on crash. Paramedics declared him dead. He was without a pulse, he says, for 90 minutes before he came back to life after a passer-by began to pray and sing hymns over his body. "The steering wheel impaled me in the chest and then the car's roof collapsed on my head so there's just no way you could survive this accident," he said.

However, he says that the experience he had before rejoining the living could not be explained as anything other than life after death. He says he remembers music that was "beyond spectacular'" and aromas that he'd never smelled before. His grandfather was there to greet him alongside several others who had died before him. They all stood in front of a magnificent gate with lights that were "pulsating with life," he said. "You know, if I was having a dream about it, this wouldn't be in it," he said. "Some of these people who met me at the gates, I haven't thought of in decades."

Mr. Piper, who endured dozens of surgeries to fix his bones, had to learn to walk again. He wrote about the trauma in The New York Times best-seller 90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death and Life. He believes he was sent back to spread the message that "heaven is a real place."

A Four-year-old's NDE and his encounter with Jesus riding a rainbow-colored horse

A Four-year-old's NDE and his encounter with Jesus riding a rainbow-colored horse

The New York Times best-selling Christian book "Heaven is for Real" (2010) is a father's account of his son Colton's trip to heaven and back. After discovering that Colton's appendix had ruptured, he was rushed to the hospital. Unconscious, the boy alleges to have met Jesus, God, his great-grandfather, whom he had never met, and his older sister, who was lost in a miscarriage but nobody had told him about.

Colton also made other extra-biblical claims that he personally met Jesus riding a rainbow-colored horse and sat in Jesus' lap, all while the angels sang songs to him. He also says that he saw the Virgin Mary kneeling before the throne of God and, at other times, standing beside Jesus.

Elizabeth Taylor's NDE and her encounter with her dead ex-husband

Elizabeth Taylor's NDE and her encounter with her dead ex-husband

Interviewed by Larry King on CNN's Larry King Live and also by ABC News, famous actress Elizabeth Taylor spoke about her experience of dying on the operating table while undergoing surgery, and of passing through a tunnel towards a brilliant white light. Taylor said that while she was clinically dead, she had encountered the spirit of Michael Todd, one of her former husbands, whom she referred to as her great love. She had wanted to stay with Todd, she said, but he had told her that she had work and life ahead of her, and he "pushed me back to my life." Following her resuscitation, the eleven-person medical team, including doctors, nurses, etc., witnessed Taylor's testimonial of this event.

"I was pronounced dead once and actually saw the light. I find it very hard to talk about, actually, because it sounds so corny. It happened in the late '50s, and I saw Mike (Todd, Taylor's third husband, who was killed in a plane crash in 1958). When I came to, there were about 11 people in the room. I'd been gone for about five minutes - they had given me up for dead and put my death notice on the wall. I shared this with the people that were in the room next to me. Then after that I told another group of friends, and I thought, ‘Wow, this sounds really screwy. I think I'd better keep quiet about this.'"

George Rodonaia's NDE after being killed by the KGB and lying dead for 3 days

George Rodonaia's NDE after being killed by the KGB and lying dead for 3 days

Pronounced dead immediately after he was hit by a car in 1976 while trying to leave the URSS, Rodonaia was left for three days in the morgue. He did not "return to life" until a doctor began to make an incision in his abdomen as part of an autopsy procedure. Prior to his NDE he worked as a neuropathologist. He was also an avowed atheist. However, after the experience he devoted himself exclusively to the study of spirituality, taking a second doctorate in the psychology of religion. He then became an ordained priest in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He served as a pastor at the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Baytown, Texas.

At this point, Rev. George Rodonaia held an M.D. and a Ph.D. in neuropathology and a Ph.D. in the psychology of religion. He delivered a keynote address to the United Nations on the "Emerging Global Spirituality." Before emigrating to the United States from the Soviet Union in 1989, he worked as a research psychiatrist at the University of Moscow. Dr. Rodonaia's experience, in his own words, can be read in Phillip Berman's book, The Journey Home. He died in 2004.

Oldest NDE on record: written by Plato in 380 BC

Oldest NDE on record: written by Plato in 380 BC

The oldest surviving explicit report of a NDE in Western literature comes from the famed Greek philosopher Plato who, in the year 380 BC, described such an event in the tenth book of his legendary work entitled Republic. Although it's called the "Myth of Er", the word "myth" in this case means "word, speech, account," rather than the modern meaning. The story begins as a man named Er dies in battle. Ten days later, when the bodies of those who died in the battle are collected, Er's body has not decomposed. Two days later he revives on his funeral-pyre and tells others of his journey into the afterlife, including an account of reincarnation and the celestial spheres of the astral plane. The tale introduces the idea that moral people are rewarded and immoral people are punished after death. The story includes an account of the cosmos and the afterlife that greatly influenced religious, philosophical, and scientific thought for many centuries.

Pregnant in six months, or your money back? New programme claims it can make ANY woman pregnant in 24 weeks

  • Claim relates to women of childbearing age only
  • Clinic claims they can help with conditions such as blocked fallopian tubes
  • Neuroscientific Fertility Treatment helps patients conceive naturally
  • If natural methods do not work clinic can help prepare the body for IVF
  • Techniques include acupuncture, mindfulness and healthy eating
  • The natural method has success rates of up to 77 per cent

Tragically, for increasing numbers of couples, starting a family isn't as simple as it's supposed to be.

Whether it's polycystic ovaries, a low sperm count or, worst of all, unexplained infertility, many are forced to make the heartbreaking decision to spend their savings on IVF or give up on their dreams of family life altogether.

But a solution could be on the horizon courtesy of a groundbreaking new method called 'Neuroscientific Fertility Treatment', which is claimed to have results within 24 weeks.

Healthy: Neuroscientific Fertility Treatment improves wellbeing as part of helping would-be mothers conceive

The new treatment focuses on removing mental blockages that prevent pregnancy and reducing the stress hormone cortisol, which can also impede conception.

As well as improving patients' mental state, the treatment programme also helps boost physical health - creating the optimum conditions for conception.

Other recommendations include having regular sex throughout the cycle in order to reduce pressure during fertile times and staying hydrated.

Created by neuroscientist, Dr Michael Arnold, the programme is totally natural and, according to Arnold, has a success rate of between 66 and 77 per cent depending on the reason for infertility.

Other research carried out by Arnold and his team found that 75 per cent of couples who committed to at least 20 treatments over a six month period achieved a successful pregnancy, compared to just 32.3 per cent with IVF.

Effective: According to Dr Arnold, 77 per cent of patients are pregnant within 9 months of having acupuncture

WANT TO TRY IT? DR ARNOLD'S TOP 12 TIPS FOR QUICK CONCEPTION

1. Have regular intercourse
Research has shown that couples who have regular intercourse (at least three times per week) throughout the cycle can double their chances of getting pregnant. Couples who have intercourse that is mainly concentrated around ovulation will take longer to conceive.
The fertile window is much larger than most people realise as both sperm eggs can live for several days inside the womb, prior to fertilisation. What's more, the stress caused by figuring out the 'most fertile time' can actually reduce your chances of success.

2. Stay hydrated
Flow is an essential principle of Five Elements Acupuncture, which teaches that body, mind and emotions are interconnected as modern research in psychoneuroimmunology and neuroscience is now corroborating.

Staying adequately hydrated is essential to maintain flow. For cells to function properly, for organ systems to connect and work well together, and to maximise fertility, drink at least 1 1/2 litres a day of filtered or bottled water.

Your urine should be a light yellow, straw-like colour. This prevents the accumulation of unwanted and waste materials, which can lead to fatigue, stress, blocks and stagnation in joints, gut, blood, body organs, thoughts and feelings.

3. Eat breakfast every morning between seven and nine
Your body follows daily rhythms and patterns. Certain organs have times of peak activity. For the stomach, this time is between seven and nine every morning. At this time, the body is most receptive to taking in vital nutrients. It is therefore essential to ensure that you eat a good breakfast every morning.

If this window is missed, you will not be able to make up for it later in the day. Conversely the stomach is least active between seven and nine in the evening so this is the worst time to have your biggest meal of the day. When people say breakfast is the most important meal of the day they are not joking.

To maximise your nutrient intake follow the adage 'Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper'.

4. Forget five a day
Instead, you should be aiming for nine a day, as the natural antioxidants help protect the egg, sperm and developing cells from daily damage.

5 . Make sure you're asleep by 11pm
Nighttime is when your body goes into growth and repair mode. Healthy sperm and eggs develop and the whole body regenerates. It is therefore essential that you make the most of this period.

It has been scientifically proven that the period between 11pm and 8am is when the best sleep is possible. According to ancient Chinese wisdom, 11pm marks the start of a new phase of activity - characterised by physical and mental rejuvenation.

Obviously the odd late night does you no harm but if you regularly go to bed after 11pm your body will not get the full benefits of a good night's sleep.

6. Exercise for 30 minutes, three times per week
Regular exercise is essential to ensure your body is in the optimum condition for conception to occur. Not only does it stimulate the heart and circulatory system, it also increases the body's capacity to take in and use oxygen.

This is the vital substance that every cell in the body needs to create energy and growth. Regular exercise also leads to reduced stress levels, which is another vital ingredient in a successful pregnancy.

7. Get in touch with nature
With our busy lives and our concrete cities, we tend to forget that, as human beings, we too are a part of nature. Five Elements Acupuncture is governed by the laws of nature and puts us back in touch with our own unique nature.

Healing is a natural function. When you cut yourself you don't have to figure out how to make the cut heal. Nature takes care of that. At least once a week remind yourself of this by taking a walk in the countryside, a park or wood, or just sitting by a river or flowing water. Look at the sky and listen to the birds sing reconnect, slow down and appreciate being a part of nature.

This restores balance and harmony to your body, emotions and mind, and regulates body chemicals and hormones, essential for fertility. Neuroscience now backs what we all instinctively know to be true - that being in touch with nature is good for you.

8. Get your fat balance right
Sperm health, hormone balance and healthy circulation all depend on it, so limit saturated fat from intensively reared animals and include daily well-chewed or ground seeds.
Avoid foods fried at a high temperature and all hydrogenated fats. Also take a purified fish oil, or safer still an algae oil, supplement.

9. Avoid alcohol and caffeine
In men both have been shown to reduce fertility and make pregnancy take twice as long to achieve.

10. Get tested
Before people start the programme, we test their hair for potentially harmful heavy metals which can hinder fertility and run an adrenal stress test to help determine whether their cortisol and DHEA levels need support to optimise fertility.

11. Be mindful
To reduce your stress and cortisol levels, restore balance to your internal organ systems, and maximise fertility, it's essential to play the 'Inner Game of Health', so your brain sends the right signals to your body.

Take a moment, maybe a minute, out of every hour when you are at work to become aware of your breath, check through your body and notice how you are feeling. Accept this without judgement or evaluation, take one big deep breathe, exhale completely, and move on.

Even 20 to 30 seconds will help reduce stress, rewire your brain and promote healthy changes in your body.

12. Avoid environmental toxins where possible
In particular the hormone disrupting chemical, BPA found in plastics and lined tin cans, which may hinder implantation.

Especially avoid buying, storing and heating high fat foods such as oils and cheese and acidic foods such as tinned tomatoes.
