Tough as a pair of old boots....Nelson Mandela returns home from hospital

Former South African President Nelson Mandela has returned to his home in Johannesburg after a long stay in hospital in Pretoria.

The 95-year-old was admitted with a recurring lung infection on 8 June.

Last week he was said to be critical but stable and "showing great resilience", and there has been no official update on him since then.

The country's first black president, Mr Mandela is revered by many as the father of the nation.

His prolonged hospital stay has caused concern both in South Africa and abroad.

The infection is said to date back to a period of nearly three decades he spent in prison for anti-apartheid activity.

The BBC's Mike Wooldridge in Johannesburg says it will be a relief for his family and for the nation that Mr Mandela has improved sufficiently for the journey to be made and for him to be cared for at home.

Cannibal Cult Leader 'Black Jesus', Hacked To Death In Papua New Guinea

A cult leader suspected of cannibalism and sacrificial blood rituals has been hacked to death, police in Papua New Guinea say.

Convicted rapist Steven Tari, who was known as “Black Jesus”, had been on the run since a mass jail break-out earlier this year, the PNG Post Courier reports.

Madang provincial police commander Sylvester Kalaut confirmed his death and urged other escapees still on the run to surrender to avoid the same fate.

Tari had been serving a prison term after being convicted of raping young girls and women who belonged to his Christian-based sect in 2010.

The former bible student had been accused of cannibalism, though he was only tried for rape, AFP reports. As part of his "culture ministry", he preached that young girls were to be "married" to him as it was God's prophecy.

In 2007 Fox News reported Tari had been involved in human sacrifice, drinking blood and eating flesh.

Tari (pictured in 2007) was beaten and captured by villagers who later handed him to the police

Kalaut told PNG daily The National that Tari and a disciple were in the process of attacking a young woman, when a group of angry villagers from Gal surrounded the pair and hacked them to death.

Tari is believed to have been involved in the murder of a young girl close to the village just a week ago.

“Those who live by the sword, die by the sword,” district administrator Lawrence Pitor told the newspaper.

He added: “(Tari) brought his own demise by the evil he dwelled in.”

Violent crime and allegations of witchcraft are rife in Papua New Guinea, where the government earlier this year voted to revive the death penalty.

Lamar Odom Arrested

  • The NBA star was arrested on suspicion of DUI in the early hours of Thursday morning
  • Lamar was being held on $15,000 bail but has now been released from custody
  • TMZ report that Lamar was visited by two drug counselors hours before his arrest
  • According to the California Highway Patrol Officer he will lose his driver's license for a year
Trouble: Lamar Odom, seen making a stop at Taco Bell on Wednesday, was arrested for DUI in the early hours of Friday morning

On Friday morning, Khloe's husband Lamar Odom was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in the early hours of Friday morning.

The NBA star, 33, was held at Van Nuys police station on $15,000 bail but was released from custody at 8.30am.

He was pulled over just before 4am for driving too slow at 50mph on the 101 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley.

Odom did not immediately respond to police, passing three exits and driving erratically, TMZ reports.

He failed numerous field sobriety checks but refused all chemical tests, according to police.

Booking sheet: The NBA star is understood to have failed several sobriety tests

The California Highway Patrol public information officer, told Radar Online: 'Lamar Odom was driving 50 mph on the 101 freeway. He was driving in a serpentine manner which is pretty bad. That is like when the officer does a freeway break. Across all the lanes of the freeway. I’m surprised he wasn’t rear ended.'

After 'failing' field sobriety tests, he was taken into custody and Tang said: 'He did what no one should ever do, he refused the chemical tests.

'That means that his license is revoked and Lamar could get the most powerful attorney in the world and he is still not going to have a license for a year.'

To make matters worse, it has now been revealed that Lamar was paid a visit by two drug councelors just hours before he was charged with a DUI.

TMZ reports that the counselors - who work with the National Basketball Players Association - contacted Lamar to offer help and he accepted.

Two Kenyan men sign an agreement to "marry" the same woman.

Sylvester Mwendwa
Sylvester Mwendwa said he would pay the bride price

Two Kenyan men have signed an agreement to "marry" the same woman.

The woman had been having affairs with both men for more than four years and apparently refused to choose between them.

The agreement sets out a rota for Sylvester Mwendwa and Elijah Kimani to stay in her house and states they will both help raise any children she bears.

Mr Mwendwa told the BBC he loved the woman and said the contract would "set boundaries" and "keep the peace".

Lawyers said the "marriage" would only be recognised if they could prove polyandry - a woman having more than one husband - was part of their custom.

The BBC's David Okwembah in the capital, Nairobi, says polyandry is not practised by any community in Kenya.

People have reacted with shock to the "marriage", arguing that it is not acceptable in terms of their culture, religion or the law, he says.

Defending the "marriage", Mr Mwendwa told the BBC Focus on Africa programme that while he may acting in breach of the law, he had decided to enter into a contract with Mr Kimani to end their rivalry.

"It could have been very dangerous if the other man would have come to her house and caught me... So our agreement is good as it sets boundaries and helps us keep peace."
'No jealousy'
Community policing officer Adhalah Abdulrahman persuaded the two men to marry the woman after he saw them fighting over her in Mombasa county, the local Daily Nation newspaper reports.

"We have agreed that from today we will not threaten or have jealous feelings because of our wife, who says she's not ready to let go of any of us," the agreement says, Kenya's NTV station reports.

"Each one will respect the day set aside for him. We agree to love each other and live peacefully. No-one has forced us to make this agreement," it adds.

Mr Mwendwa said her parents had given their blessing, while he is planning to pay the bride price.

The woman, a widow with two children, did not want to be named.

Mr Mwendwa told the BBC he did not marry the woman simply to satisfy his sexual desires but because he loved her and, most of all, her children.

"I have never been called a dad and her two children call me daddy," he said.

He said he hoped to have his own children with the woman, but she would have to decide.

"She is like the central referee. She can say whether she wants me or my colleague," he added.

Kenyan family lawyer Judy Thongori told the Daily Nation that the law does not explicitly forbid polyandry.

"The laws we have do not talk about it but for such a union to be recognised in Kenya, it has to be either under the statutory law or as customary marriage. The question we should ask now is whether these people come from communities that have been practising polyandry," she is quoted as saying.

Do i look ugly to you??...Check out these pics

Do I look ugly to you? The blobfish, the pig-nosed turtle and the proboscis monkey compete to be world's UGLIEST animal

 The Axolotl

All animals are beautiful. Except, perhaps, for some of these. But just because they aren't as easy on the eye as a newborn puppy or a fluffy pony, it doesn't mean they don't need looking after. So the Ugly Animal Preservation Society (yep, it exists) has launched a campaign to save these endangered species and encourage young people into careers in conservation: they are searching for a new ugly mascot.
