Woman Power!!...Sex Strike In Togo

Women Of Togo Asked To Keep "The Gates Of Their Motherland Locked To All Men" For A Week

Isabelle Ameganvi, pictured, leader of the opposition Let's Save Togo, called for a "one-week sex strike, fasting and prayers."

Women in Togo are being asked to refuse to have sex with their men for a week starting on Monday, to press for the release of activists arrested during recent anti-government protests. The leader of an opposition movement, Isabelle Ameganvi, called on women to "keep the gates of the motherland locked to all men for a week" as she put it.

"We have power to change things. We do not want to remain in the kitchen, but we can have our say in politics," Ameganvi said. "We cannot stay hand-crossed, as our children and husbands are being kept in jail."

In addition to the sex strike, she called on women to wear a special colour during a demonstration which will take place on Thursday.

"You all have to be dressed up in red pants to show your anger," she said, amid cheers.

"If our people are not released by Thursday, the women are going to rush to the prison naked to get them released, only in red pants and nothing else," she said.

The security minister said any attempts to enter the prison will lead to arrests.

Her movement is seeking an end to four decades of government by the Eyadema family.
