Piles of junk as far back as 40 years and up to 144 tons was cleared from retired 72 year old accountant John Howe's semi detached bungalow. Shocked neighbours alerted the authorities when they noticed the squalor and maggots and rats which were spreading to nearby properties.

“He is a very private man and I am shocked because he always dresses well and would always stop to tip his hat and exchange pleasantries in the street” said a neighbour.
“We had no idea what was going on. It is very sad.”
