According to reports, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said the officer had stopped to investigate a traffic accident when the firing started.

'There was an officer in front of a white car and a man running away who shot,' said a witness, Ahmed Sassi, who saw the shooting from his home.

He said the shooter was not masked and wore dark clothes.

'It didn't look like a big gun because he held it with one hand,' Sassi said.

William Thomas, a 19-year-old who lives close to this morning's attack, said: 'I was woken up by the first three shots.

'Then I heard someone shout "Take that" and there were another two shots. It was before 8am.'

A man who appeared to be of North African origin was seen running away from the scene. He was thought to be wearing a bullet proof vest.

Manhunt for 3 suspects involved in a deadly terrorist attack on an anti-Islamist newspaper which left not less than 12 people dead in France

Two brothers were tonight named as being among the three suspects involved in a deadly terrorist attack on an anti-Islamist newspaper in France.
Said Kouachi, 34,

The Masked gunmen had stormed Paris headquarters with AK-47s shouting 'Allahu akbar!' and 'the Prophet has been avenged'

They stalked the building asking for people's names before killing the editor, three renowned cartoonists and the deputy chief editor - men who had regularly satirised Islam.

Editor Stephane Charbonnier had famously shrugged off threats, saying: 'I'd rather die standing than live kneeling'

The gunmen escaped in a hijacked car and remained on the loose this evening after a shootout with police.

President Barack Obama offered U.S. help in pursuing the gunmen, saying they had attacked freedom of expression.

Said Kouachi, 34, and Cherif Kouachi, 32, were identified along with Hamyd Mourad, 18, all French nationals.

The suspected Al Qaeda militants massacred 12 people in Paris today - and among those slaughtered was a police officer as he begged for mercy.

Thousands of people gathered tonight at the Republique Square near the scene to honour the victims, holding signs reading 'Je suis Charlie' - 'I am Charlie'.

Relatives of the passengers hear news that bodies have been found
The discovery of six bodies and debris in the Java Sea today put a painful end to the mystery of the missing AirAsia Flight 8501, which disappeared two days ago with 162 people on board.
The bodies were found about 160km from  land and 10km from the plane's last communication with air traffic control. The plane vanished on Sunday on its way from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore after encountering storm clouds.
Six bodies were taken to an Indonesian navy ship, First Admiral Sigit Setiayanta, the Naval Aviation Centre commander at the Surabaya air force base, told reporters. The victims were not wearing life jackets.

Search and rescue teams were lowered on ropes from a hovering helicopter amidst strong winds to recover the bodies.
The discovery came after several pieces of red, white and black debris were spotted in the Java Sea near Borneo island. AirAsia planes are red and white.
Mr Supriyadi said that, from an aircraft above, he saw what appeared to be a life jacket and an emergency exit door. More wreckage could be seen beneath the water.
Indonesian television showed the half-naked body of a man whose shirt partially covered his head. The images sent a shockwave through family members watching together in a waiting room at Surabaya airport.
Many screamed and wailed uncontrollably, breaking down in tears while they squeezed each other. One middle-aged man collapsed and had to be taken out on a stretcher.
AirAsia group chief executive Tony Fernandes said on Twitter: "My heart is filled with sadness for all the families involved in QZ 8501. On behalf of AirAsia my condolences to all. Words cannot express how sorry I am."
