Dead Colorado school shooter wanted 'revenge' on faculty member, sheriff says

Centennial, Colorado (CNN) -- A student who opened fire Friday inside a suburban Denver high school appears to have been seeking revenge against a faculty member because of a "confrontation or disagreement," the Arapahoe County sheriff said.

The shooter, identified as 18-year-old Karl Halverson Pierson, shot one student before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life, Sheriff Grayson Robinson told reporters.

The shooting began after the student walked into Arapahoe High School in Centennial with the intention of confronting a specific faculty member, Robinson said.

"The suspect has been found inside the school and he has deceased as a result of what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Robinson said in one of his first statements after the shooting.

Authorities revised downward the number of students wounded in the shooting to one. Two students were previously reported to have suffered gunshot wounds. But Robinson said Friday night that an investigation concluded there was only one after it was discovered that blood on another person was from the sole victim.

Students are escorted out of Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado, on Friday, December 13. A student who carried a shotgun into Arapahoe High School and asked where to find a specific teacher opened fire on Friday, wounding two fellow students before apparently killing himself, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said.

The shooter, identified as 18-year-old Karl Halverson Pierson, shot one student before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson told reporters.

Arapahoe High School shooting

Student: We heard a bang, then two more

One person -- a minor -- was taken to Littleton Adventist Hospital with a gunshot wound, Lauren Brendel, a hospital spokeswoman, told CNN.

Brendel did not release the age, gender and condition of the minor. But Robinson told reporters that the condition of a a 15-year-old girl who was shot was in critical condition after surgery.

Authorities descended on the school after news of the shooting broke -- on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

The shooting also occurred roughly 10 miles from where Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and one teacher in a rampage at Columbine High School in April 1999 before killing themselves.

Pierson walked into Arapahoe High School carrying a shotgun and made no attempt to hide it, Robinson said. He then asked other students the whereabouts of a faculty member, he said.

A school janitor told CNN affiliate KMGH that he saw a student dressed in tactical gear running through the school.

"It just looked weird," the janitor, Fabian Llerenas, said. "He went in and I heard two pops. That's when I knew. I said, 'They are shooting in the school.'"

Llerenas said he called 911, and he then escorted the targeted faculty member out of the school.

"In my opinion, that was the most important tactical decision that could have been made," Robinson said. The faculty member "left that school in an effort to try to encourage the shooter to also leave the school."

Pierson's body was found later in a classroom, Robinson told reporters. The student appears to have acted alone, he said.

In addition to the shotgun, authorities found two Molotov cocktails inside the school, Robinson said.

One of the Molotov cocktails detonated, he said. The other was "rendered safe," Robinson said.

As part of the investigation, authorities also will be looking at school surveillance video, the sheriff said.

Investigators also are searching Pierson's car, his home and another home that he had access to, the sheriff said.

High school senior Frank Woronoff told CNN he had known Pierson since they were freshmen together.

"He was the last person I would expect to shoot up a high school. He was honestly incredibly humble and down to earth. He was a little geeky but in a charming way," he said. "So I don't know anyone who hates him really, so it came as a surprise -- to me at least."

The first sheriff's deputies and police officers arrived at Arapahoe and entered almost immediately after the shooting was reported, Robinson said.

While authorities hunted for the student gunman inside the school, students were locked in their classrooms.

Courtney Leytoldt told KMGH she saw a girl, covered in blood, running down the stairs yelling, "Help me, help me, there's a shooter."

Leytoldt said she was in yoga class and that her teacher told all the students to get into a closet to protect them.

Ninth-grader Whitney Riley was getting ready to grab her computer from her locker when the shooting began.

"We were having fun and laughing and then, all of a sudden, we heard a really loud bang," the 15-year-old told CNN.

"My teacher asked what it was and then we heard two more and we all just got up and screamed and ran into a sprinkler system room."

Inside the windowless room were five students and two teachers. "We were shaking, we were crying, we were freaking out," Riley said. "I had a girl biting my arm."

They soon heard people yelling, and walkie-talkies crackling, and then they heard police asking someone to drop the gun, put the gun down, and hold his arms up, she said.

She did not hear another gunshot, though the people doing the talking could have moved farther away, she said. Soon, they heard police ordering them out.

Colton Powers told CNN affiliate KDVR that he heard gunfire during his English class.

At that point, his teacher turned off the lights and locked the door.

"We ran to a corner so they couldn't see us," Powers said.

Within about 14 minutes of the initial report, "we had information on the radio that my deputies believed they had the shooter down inside the school," Robinson said.

Dozens of students could be seen walking away from the school, with their hands in the air. Some stood in lines at what appeared the high school track field, where they appeared to be undergoing police pat-downs.

Students were then taken by bus to a nearby church where they were reunited with their families, Robinson said.

The high school, with a student population of 2,229 students, has 70 classrooms. The school, which was built in 1964, is part of the Littleton Public Schools system.

Gov. John Hickenlooper called the shooting an "all-too-familiar sequence, where you have gunshots and parents racing to the school and unspeakable horror in a place of learning."

President Barack Obama was briefed on the shooting, according to a White House official.

A year after the tragedy, Mother of Sandy Hook victim finds healing through forgiveness

Jesse Lewis, 6, saved his classmates by shouting “Run!” the day a lone gunman walked into his classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School. It was an act of heroism that cost the innocent child his life.

JesseLewisandmom.jpg

The last time Scarlett Lewis saw her son, Jesse, he was scribbling "I love you" on the frosty window of her car. She grabbed her phone to take a picture, not knowing it would be the last picture she ever took of the six-year-old.

Later that morning, Jesse was one of 20 children and six adults shot to death at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

A year after the tragedy, Scarlett Lewis has just published a book, "Nurturing, Healing, Love," about how she has tried to heal.

Lewis says her son was "the perfect dichotomy" of an exuberant little boy and her little "cuddle bug" who still inspires her every day.

"I don't use the past tense because I feel him all around me. He is an incredible light," she told CTV's Canada AM from New York.

Jesse was also a hero, Lewis says, because the morning he died, his last act was to try to save others.

When the gunman, Adam Lanza, walked into Jesse's class, he killed Jesse's beloved teacher Victoria Sotto first. Then, his gun jammed. According to children who survived that day, Jesse yelled for his classmates on the other side of the room to run. While six kids escaped, Jesse stayed put. Lanza reloaded his gun and shot Jesse in the forehead.

While Lewis says she wishes more than anything that Jesse had run too, she takes comfort in knowing that her son helped some of his classmates survive.

"They said it was because Jesse yelled that they ran," she says.

For Lewis, mornings are still the hardest and so she takes 15 minutes every morning just to grieve. She goes to her son's tombstone, says a prayer, thanks him, and allows herself to cry. She also tells Jesse, once again, that she's sorry – sorry for what happened, and for any pain or suffering he went through.

"It's what every parent would feel," she explained. "You send your child off to school; it's your job to keep them safe. And I know that it's not really logical, that there was nothing I could do. But still, I sent him off to school and he died."

Lewis and her older son J.T. say they have learned to forgive Lanza for what he did and no longer feel anger toward him.

"For me, it was the only way I could go on with my personal power intact," Lewis explains.

Not long after the massacre, Lewis’ therapist put her in virtual touch with a group of survivors of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. It was through them that Lewis says she learned to forgive.

"These young adults had seen their entire families murdered in front of them," she says. "They said, 'We want you to know we've been through this. We know you're going to be okay. Here's our equation for healing.' And it was basically living a life of gratitude, forgiving those who had murdered their families, and making a conscious decision to do that so they could move on without anger in themselves. And service to others. Because when you give to others you get so much more back."

Lewis and her son took that message to heart, she says, and made the decision to forgive, using the Rwandans' experience as perspective.

"If they could forgive the neighbours who came in and murdered their families, then we could forgive Adam Lanza," she says.

Lewis has now created the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation, to develop programs to teach children that they have the power to change thoughts and choose a life without hate.

Her son J.T. has also been fundraising for the Rwandan survivors and has raised enough so far to send one of them to college.

"His decision to do that has been so incredibly healing," Lewis says. "And I've just watched him, over the past year, turn into this incredibly compassionate person and I couldn't be more proud of him."

Ladies, Stop Putting Your Phone In Your Bra!

Bras are holding a lot more than just breasts..... For some ladies, their bras are more of a purse carrying a variety of items ranging from keys, money, make-up, and cellphones to water bottles and baby pacifiers!

cell-phone-bra

When you think about scenarios such as working out or clubbing, keeping your belongings in your bra are super convenient.

Unfortunately, as great as this idea might seem, there are several doctors out there begging us to STOP!
Cancer surgeon John West, specifically, states that “placing your cellphone in your bra can cause breast cancer. Any woman placing her cellphone on her chest is playing with fire.”

Women who have developed breast cancer due to this have developed tumors that lined up exactly where they regularly placed their cellphones.

Conclusion? Bra was created for one purpose..... To hold breasts.

So just carry a purse or a phone case.  It’s better for your health!

Following the release of a video on the internet of a gang sodomizing two women who allegedly stole pepper, an elected official and the police issue conflicting reports about the incident.

Photo: Two members of a market vigilantee group sodomize the helpless woman accused of stealing pepper

Following the release of a video on the internet of a gang sodomizing two women, an elected official and the police are issuing conflicting reports about the incident.
Video footage shows a faceless gang attacking two women, unidentified, stripping them naked, and thrusting ground pepper and hard sticks into the genitals of one of them and covering her in a heavy liquid.  A second victim, a teenage girl, was tortured as well.
Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, Chairman of Ejigbo government issued a press release today saying the sodomizing incident took place in the central market in Iyana Ejigbo in February 2013.
According to Mr. Bamigbetan and his team, a practice of pepper sellers is to leave their goods on their stalls.  The sellers reported two women allegedly stealing the pepper, a woman and her step-daughter, to vigilantes they hired to secure the market.  After the torture by vigilantes, both females confessed to stealing the pepper and were let go.  Members of the vigilante group feared news of the torture would spread and those who carried it out would be penalized and the gang was disbanded.  The woman was identified as the wife of the palm wine tapper. The market since the incident has been converted to shops and rented out.
Mr. Bamigbetan released information collected by his team but people are questioning whether they have delayed reports and interfered with the police investigation.
Lagos State Police, however, said they have no clue yet on the location or the gang that carried out the torture. In a phone conversation with a citizen correspondent in Lagos, Mrs. Ngozi Braide, speaking for the Lagos State Police, who contacted the DPO at Ejigbo for an update said "there is no update what-so-ever on the identities of either the victims or the culprits."
Mrs. Braide asked that any member of the public with possession of information regarding the identity of the gang or victims, place of incidence, and other clues on the incidence should contact the police to order to assist their investigation.
"We only saw the video on the internet and no can tell exactly where it happened.  You see, the setting does not really look like a marketplace.  It looks like a house."
She added, "it is a really wicked act, and you know, the victims also did not report to the police.  I saw how they were putting sticks in her private parts in the video.  It is very wicked."
The video has been condemned by civil society groups and women advocacy groups across the country.  The Women Arise Initiative, led by Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, said her group is planning a public protest against the brutality and to call attention to other violence against women in Nigeria.

PHOTO: Man locked in CAGE by his mum for more than 40 years over fears he could hurt himself

Peng Weiqing, 48, has been in the cage in his mother's home in the city of Zhengzhou since he was six years old

A Chinese man has been locked in a cage for more than 40 years by his mother.

Peng Weiqing, 48, has been in the cage in his mother's home in the city of Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, since he was six.

As a baby, Weiqing suffered brain damage following a fever. He then begun suffering severe epilectic fits at the age of six.

His mother, Peng Waimei, says she has kept him locked in the cage since then in order to protect him.

Fearing that he would hurt himself and unable to afford medical treatment, Waimei's husband built a series of cages that got bigger as Weiqing grew.

Waimei said: "He can't control himself.

"When he was young, quite often he would cut himself with a knife and glass debris.

"Even when walking, he could suddenly fall down and hit his face and make it bleed.

"He must know me, although he may not know the meaning of "mother". He is my 48-year-old child."

Aged 80 and with her husband now dead, Waimei fears for her son when she dies and hopes to find someone to take care of him.

Tragic: Mum who drank from 'morning until night' found dead aged just 30 after falling down the stairs

Tragic: Emma Hopwood
Manchester Evening News

Tragic mum Emma Hopwood fell downstairs and died after her drinking spiralled out of control.

The pretty 30-year-old mother-of-three began drinking from when she woke up in the morning until she went to bed at night.

Her good looks disguised the amount of alcohol she was getting through and she masked the scale of the problem by hiding empty bottles and cans around the house.

Emma’s mother Janet Maher, 48, from Stockport, Greater Manchester told an inquest: “The way my daughter died could happen to anyone young lady who drinks too much alcohol for her own good.

“She started drinking when she was a teenager when she used to go out to the pub with her friends like most girls her age.

“In later life she would phone me sometimes and I could tell she had had a drink because she was slurring her words.

“She always drank cheap cider and she used to hide empty cans. She would hide them in cupboards, in the laundry basket, in the toilet cistern, under the bed, in bags, in handbags.

“She used to go upstairs quite a lot and that was a sign that she was drinking. Later I would find empty cans in the bedrooms.

“I had to hide all the drink in the house. Towards the end I don’t know how many cans of cider she was drinking. “

Emma’s body was found last June at the bottom of the stairs at her home by her estranged partner, Barry Shepherd, with whom she had a stormy relationship. The couple split up after a series of drunken and violent rows.

Mr Shepherd told the inquest in Sale: “She was lay at the bottom of the stairs with her feet going up the stairs.

"She had blood on her nose and when I first saw her I was ready to 'say get off the floor, you silly devil.'

Tests showed she was more than three times the limit for drink driving and had two fractures to her skull after falling backwards down the stairs whilst unsteady on her feet.

Police found numerous empty cans of cider and numerous empty crates at the scene.

Miss Hopwood’s best friend Debra Walters told the hearing: “Emma was not a binge drinker.

"She was someone who drank from when she woke up to when she went to sleep.

“But she always tended to the baby. She always made sure he was fed and changed.

"It did shock me how she could drink and look after the baby at the same time.”

Returning an open verdict Coroner John Pollard said: “I think that Emma did bang her head on the stairs.”

Australia: Horrific remote ‘incest cult’ in which brothers and sisters were encouraged to have sex and procreate.....children were deformed and unable to speak or wash themselves

Outback: The family were found in a remote valley

Deformed children unable to speak or wash themselves have been discovered in a remote Australian valley in the worst case of incest the country has seen.

The 40-strong family of adults and youngsters are the result of four generations of inbreeding in which brothers and sisters were encouraged to have sex.

The depraved ‘incest cult’ was found living in squalid sheds, tents and caravans without plumbing or running water.

The family is believed to have been started by great-great grandparents who were themselves brother and sister

Younger members had oddly-formed features, severe learning disabilities and did not know how to use a toilet or loo roll.

They included a boy with a walking impairment and severe psoriasis, another with hearing and sight problems and a third boy whose eyes were misaligned.

A nine-year-old girl could not hear or write, had stunted speech and was unable to bathe or dry herself.

Sickening details of generations of child abuse emerged from the New South Wales Children’s Court which placed some of the children in psychological treatment programmes for over-sexualised behaviour.

The court’s findings are normally kept secret but judges took the unusual step of publishing details of the worst case of incest it had ever recorded.

Siblings who had sex as soon as they were old enough then had offspring which were also encouraged to procreate.

Fathers are also believed to have had sex with their daughters.

The family had moved around from South Australia to Western Australia and then back across Australia to the picturesque valley south of Sydney.

Their camp was only discovered when residents from the nearest town 20 miles away reported there were children living in the hills who did not attend school.

Stunned social workers found dirt-covered stoves and cooking facilities, rotten food in a fridge and a kangaroo sleeping on one of the children’s beds.

They were told how three brothers aged 14 and under tied their sister, 8, and niece, 13, naked to a tree.

The court documents revealed mouth swabs deduced five children had parents who were themselves “closely related” to one another while another five had parents who were “related”.

One resident from the town - the name of which has not been released - said people joked that if anyone came from that valley “you’d be inbred”.

The family has been given the new surname Colt to protect the identities of the children. Some have been placed with foster parents.

Another resident who saw them shopping told a Sydney newspaper: “They were never clean looking.

“There was nothing on the land where they lived. No electricity, no water - just scrub.”

LAGOS - Key witness in a murder case hacked to death

Eniola Akinkuotu

PUNCH - There was tension in the Yaba and Bariga areas of Lagos State on Tuesday after the murder of a 36-year-old man, Segun Ogbere, who was killed by members of a gang known as Downtown Boys.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Ogbere, who went by the pseudonym, Shaggy, was also alleged to be the leader of a gang known as Shaggy Boys.

According to Police sources, the victim is the key witness in a murder case against a former leader of the Ilajes in the state.

It was said that Ogbere was trailed from the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court by Downtown Boys led by one Balogun, aka Small Jaypron, and hacked to death.

A police source said, “The former leader is facing a murder charge at the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court for the death of one James Areomiye, who was slain last year. Ogbere was our only witness in the case.

“We were told that as Ogbere was about leaving the court, he saw some Downtown Boys around the court so he sneaked out of the premises, entered a commercial tricycle and fled. The hoodlums saw him and chased him.

“Ogbere saw his friend driving a tipper so he alighted from the tricycle, entered the passenger seat of the tipper, thinking the thugs were no longer on his trail. However, the assailants soon caught up with him.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that around 3pm, Small Jaypron, in company with three others in a vehicle, crossed the tipper around Adeshina Street, off University Road, Abule Oja, and dragged Ogbere out of the vehicle.

Eyewitnesses told PUNCH Metro that the hoodlums, who were wielding guns and knives, stabbed the deceased many times before fleeing.

“About four guys alighted from a red Volkswagen Gulf car and dragged the guy (Ogbere) out of the passenger seat and started stabbing the guy repeatedly and ripped out his intestines.

“Probably because this is a residential area and it’s always quiet, the guys did not fire a shot so as not to attract the attention of men of the Rapid Response Squad who are stationed on University Road.”

Our correspondent learnt that the incident caused a traffic snarl from University of Lagos gate down to Onike as loyalists of Shaggy were said to have protested his murder.

A landlady in the area, who wished to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the case, said policemen attached to Sabo Police Division did not respond to the distress call until an hour after the incident.

She said, “After the killing, about five of Shaggy’s boys, who were wielding guns, stormed the scene. As RRS men attempted to recover the corpse, the boys protested and beat up one Sergeant Innocent and vandalised the patrol vehicle.

“When we saw that the police were being overwhelmed, we alerted the Divisional Police Officer, Sabo, SP Anthony Aruna, but his men did not arrive until an hour later. It was members of the Odua Peoples Congress that were able to subdue them and arrest one of them.”

Meanwhile, our correspondent, learnt that Shaggy’s boys have threatened to carry out reprisals for their leader’s murder

Our correspondent, who visited Ilaje, Bariga area, on Wednesday, observed six police patrol vehicles in the area.

A senior police officer attached to Bariga Police Division, said, “We are here to ensure that the area remains peaceful. Ilaje is Shaggy’s stronghold and we want to forestall any reprisal.”

Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, told our correspondent that the police had commenced investigations into the murder.

PUNCH Metro had reported that Balogun was arrested and charged with the murder of five people and was remanded in Ikoyi Prison but was released under controversial circumstances.

It had also been reported that many others had been killed in Bariga, Akoka, Yaba and Abule Ijesa areas due to the rivalry between the two gangs.

Braide said, “I am aware of the killing and the matter is now being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department Yaba. We are also on the trail of the suspects.”

VIDEO: Mandela memorial interpreter blames flawed interpretation on a schizophrenic episode ....watch video of his interview!...

Thamsanqa Dyantyi: "I see angels come into the stadium"

WATCH HIS INTERVIEW BELOW:

The owners of the firm which supplied a "fake" sign language interpreter to the Mandela memorial event have vanished, a South African minister has said.

Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu apologised to the deaf community for the poor quality of interpretation given by Thamsanqa Dyantyi from SA Interpreters.

"He is Xhosa speaking. The English was a bit too much for him," she said.

Mr Dyantyi himself has blamed his flawed interpretation on a schizophrenic episode.

In an interview with local media, Thamasanqa Jantjie said he had been hearing voices in his head on stage and expressed sadness at what had happened. But there are allegations that the ANC had been warned after a previous meeting that he was a fake and there are renewed demands for answers from the government.

He also admitted he has been violent in the past.

But the minister denied there was a security issue, saying he had been properly accredited.

Mr Mandela died last week at the age of 95 and will be buried on Sunday.

His body is currently lying in state in Pretoria, with thousands queuing to pay respects.

VIDEO: Fake sign language interpretation at President Mandela's memorial service

 mandela

There is controversy over the sign language interpretation at President Mandela's memorial service on Tuesday. The deaf community complained that the interpreter was making hand motions that made no sense what so ever.

WATCH VIDEO BELOW AND SEE FOR YOURSELVES:

Cara Loening is the executive of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town and she has told Focus on Africa that the interpreter made "no sense" and was just "waving his arms in the air".

David Buxton, the CEO of the British Deaf Association criticized the whole event, telling The Telegraph that the what happened on stage behind speakers was just 'childish hand gestures and clapping, it was as if [the interpreter] had never learn a word of sign language in his life. It was hours of complete nonsense. He is clearly a fraud who wanted to stand on stage with big and important people. It's quite audacious if you think about it.'
