Deputy Governor of Ekiti State in Nigeria, Mrs Funmilayo Olayinka, has died of cancer, family sources have said.
Funmilayo Olayinka has been deputy governor of Ekiti State since 16th October 2010, advocating women’s rights in every way possible.
Mrs Olayinka, who has been receiving treatment in the UK since last month gave up the ghost earlier today. Her health had reportedly deteriorated over the last few days, according to sources close to Ekiti State government.
The 52-year-old had taken three months sick leave to get medical attention in the UK after she reportedly collapsed in December, with prayer sessions organised in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital for her recovery over the last few months.
Mrs Olayinka holds a Masters degree in public administration and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Central State University, Edmond, Oklahoma, where she was three times winner of the Dean’s honour roll.
She began a career in banking in Nigeria, with her last job before she was elected in 2010 was with Ecobank, where she was head of corporate services.
Mrs Olayinka is survived by her husband and three children.
