Toddler found alive inside public pit toilet @ Ibadan

Residents of Atenda community, Salvation Primary School, Kube, behind New Castle Hotel in Ibadan were shocked when they found a toddler crying in a public toilet in the area.

It was learnt that the baby girl, whose mother had yet to be identified, was found by a young boy who went to defecate in a public toilet in the area.

The boy (name not disclosed) said he heard the crying of a baby in the pit at the time he got to the toilet.

He said, “I heard the crying of the baby. I could not understand what was happening. The baby was crying at the time I got there. I cried for help and the people came around to see what went wrong”.

Our correspondent gathered that some members of the landlord association in the community rescued the baby girl.

The incident has since been reported at the Yemetu Police Station, Ibadan.

A resident, who gave his name as Odeyale, said, “We broke the pit and brought her out. The baby is still alive; we took her to University College Hospital where the doctors confirmed that he was alright.

“The baby has been taken to the Child Care Unit of Juvenile Correctional Institute.”

A Social Welfare officer at the centre, who simply gave his name as Kolajo, said the centre would help reduce cases of abandoned babies in the state.
